Excellent learning

Working within the Department of Health (both Gauteng and the Western Cape) comes with its challenges and rewards. A typical work day starts from 7:30 until 17:00 which includes seeing patients, diagnosing and treating different ailments. One has to manage working in the emergency department, wards and the outpatient clinic. On a daily basis it is required to balance the heavy workload and being able to be detailed and thorough. Teamwork results in the best results for patients therefore as the doctor you have to have a good working relationship with those around you- including the nursing staff and auxiliary staff. I have learned to push myself beyond what I thought I was capable of and to continue learning- to lead the team by example of hard work and care. The most challenging aspect would be to learn to give the most I can to my patients but to learn the limits of what one can do.

Pros: Learning and helping others
Cons: Long working hours

Good place to learn and for professional growth

Currently work at the Occupational Health and Safety unit as a coordinator. I have a good professional relationship with colleagues. I have been exposed to a managerial position. I have been trained in Labour Relations, Waste Management, Leadership and Management, and COID Act. I enjoy doing medical surveillance and being part of the Employee wellness team. The most challenging part is dealing with healthcare professionals that are ill, yet knowledgeable about health issues.

Pros: Great opportunity for self-development
Cons: slim chances of promotion

Clinic Exposure

CLINIC EXPOSURE Brilliant place to work with very friendly people, at times does get quiet and boring but always learning more and more things on a daily basis. Challengers that arise from a clinic level and how it is handled from the supporting hospital

Pros: A lot of free time.
Cons: Travelling to and from work

Excellent learning curve

Working as an intern for my department is challenging because as an intern you're there to learn and absorb as much knowledge as possible, but you'd find that there's no sense of urgency and people who are permanent don't prioritize and set an good example to us who are there for training. You just need to push yourself by having earger to learn, being a bit curious in a friendly and professional way and being hands-on for you to grow.

Pros: One thing i like most about my company is that there's so much work to do in different fields there for you end up learning so much and that grows you as a person and in a professional level. You learn to handle pressure and meeting deadlines
Cons: There are not so much opportunities for promotion, a person doesn't just get promoted in the department, the structure doesn't allow that.
