Great Work Experience

When I retired from ESKOM TELECOMMS in 2016 I was leading a section that specialised in Facilities Refurbishment and New Builds country wide for National Planning. It was a particularly stimulating experience for me. We worked a 44 hour week, and I traveled the country extensively to perform my duties. The challenge was to provide redundancy to the Telecomms network and to complete our work accurately and on time. I was also involved with the training of new staff just before my retirement. I returned to ESKOM for a short period on contract after my retirement. I recently i.e. on 13th and 14th March 2019 attended a Photovoltaic Solar Systems workshop presented by the SAIEE so as to update myself on the latest PV technologies. I am particularly interested in this technology. I enjoy performing design work and being proficient in what I do.

Pros: Great work experience.
Cons: Bureaucracy

Broad-based and rewarding learning

My typical day starts with a safety meeting; at the office or on site. Then followed either by project meetings (pricing, payment certificates, negotiations, progress etc) or office work (i.e. drawings, BOQ, report etc). I work with a team composed of the following: Planners; Electrical Engineers and Technicians; Contract Managers; Surveyors; Environmental Officer; Project Managers; Clerk of Works; Real Estate. A big team can has its benefits because I had room to learn things that outside my field and expertise. The most challenging aspect is working with contractors who want to cut time and costs. Also senior management with unrealistic timelines tend to course unnecessary alterations in projects. Internal processes delay us a lot as well. We have design reviews for each project to review and correct. I have learned to communicate openly, state my case confidently, listen carefully and be thorough in my work to avoid variations, wasting money and time or compromise quality.

Pros: Technical expertise enhancement and emotional intelligence
Cons: Segregation of duties and money constraints

Strong points and lowlights

My typical work day entails amongst others attending project meetings with Engineers, updating my project schedules, reading and reviewing work from consultants, liaising with other staff members and rendering advice. I have a good working relationship with my colleagues as such they come to me for advise on managing their projects. I enjoy mostly interacting with project consultants, other project managers, the general public during EIAs, offering advise to staff, managing staff when acting a Programme Manager, facilitating training, doing reports and conducting environmental audits. The most challenging aspect of my job is making sure that all my new projects offer job and training opportunities for locals which are affected by the implementation of a new project, minimize the carbon footprint, minimize the environmental impacts at a minimum cost to Eskom.

Pros: Lots of learning opportunities
Cons: No promotion, bonus or annual salary increase prospects
