Dealing with stakeholders at management level

It has been 5 years since I joined a team that has specialists like project engineers, quantity surveyors, project accountants, financial accounting, materials management and environmental management experts. All these stakeholders play a role in designing and developing assets that generate revenue for the business. We interact with them on a monthly basis to evaluate their efforts and contributions in asset creation and collectively we work for a department called Asset creation. We work together in challenging conditions to meet our targets and we always prioritise safety to ensure that the business is sustained in an environmentally friendly manner. Upon completion of projects and capitalisation of these assets, lessons learned are captured for future reference. My role in the team is to monitor project progress with regards to time, cost and quality. I also assist in investment assessment and resource allocation (Finance).

Pros: There are huge growth prospects as most trainees are retained in the organisation.
Cons: Time management is critical in this business and procrastination and deviations from schedules are highly scrutinised.

Expansion of my horizon

My current Job is interesting in that it challenges me. There's always something new to address. That keeps me on my toes and I like it. Job provides exposure to all sorts of external stakeholders such cases communities; law enforcement agencies; municipalities; other state owned entities.

Pros: Work life balance
Cons: Shift work

I’m a great team player; I operate optimally when leading a diverse team.

My typical work day starts with signing into the daily register. I often double check my appointments before having tea with colleagues and team members. This helps me gauge the general atmosphere of the people I’m working with. I spend the rest of the day scheduling and attending team meetings, tracking the schedule, giving feedback to the Project Engineering Manager. I also compile the documentation as per the governance procedures according to the relevant phase of the project. I also use some days for site visits where I interact with the client, get to know them, walk the plant and get to know the other stakeholders and end users of the plant. I am challenged by the lack of flexibility of the current management with regards to working times and working hours. I believe all policies with regards to the management of employees must be geared towards efficiency and productivity.

Pros: Diverse company with a multitude of learning opportunities
Cons: Highly political work place, discomfort associated with the company’s management

Perfect learning opportunity about the company as a whole

Typical work day for me involves a healthy, jolly, energetic day .do as much as possible ,learn something new everyday. Learned so much about the industry and applications.most challenging part of the work space was having to always prove yourself as a young professional that you are worthy and capable .Also working and adapting to working with diverse personalities was a difficult but fun challenge.

Pros: good Salary ,
Cons: limited learning opportunity

Intesive planning and cordination of all due processes.

My job involves more intense planning in order to be able to effective execute operational requirements. And that has taught me, there's nothing that can not be achieved, special if the whole team effort is realized, and this depends on the kind of the relationship that you as a Supervisor/Manager build with the team, and your fellow colleagues. I spend most of my time interacting with the team, whether is work related or not, but it helps to get to understand them, the most challenging aspect of my Job is enforcing and make sure that all due processes are being followed.

Pros: unlimited growth
Cons: Pressure

Experience through out my working years.

I had a privilege of working in the plant before transferred to do national projects and contracts from our head office. My work history gives me an advantage as I worked in different type of industries (FMCG, production, technical, projects and contracts). The environment in our department is excellent, and we are not shy of asking questions pertaining to our challenges in our different contracts. We always encourage each other to read policies and procedures related to contracts as this affect our daily running of our contracts. Challenges that we sometime faces is the different culture of site personnel.

Pros: Great opportunity to work in any environment, and be able to resolve and contractual issues.
Cons: Contracting with contractors or suppliers who are not clear of their scope of work.
