Gauteng Department of Health Reviews

Hard work. Repetitive on nature

Working in a government clinic is fulfilling in terms of helping those that would ordinarily not have the funds to access my service. It is just frustrating in terms of low pay and lack of adequate resources

Pros: Flexible working hours
Cons: No opportunity for promotion

Excellent working conditions

Content in bringing a change in people's lives with good and definite work security. Good management with proper experience and qualifications. A place called home to the extent of missing the workplace even when you're off

Pros: Great opportunity for academical growth
Cons: Long working hours

Right to Care Projects Launched

The pilot launch of the Medication Error project was successful ( less than p < 0.05 mistakes ) during the latter months of the year 2014 , when a large number of patients, were getting ready to travel to far away destinations for the holiday season. This was not possible if it were not for the great group of staff members that functioned as a unit , the diligance to work under pressure conditions , strict record keeping , the follow up on problem cases and make recommendations ( solutions ) to improve the recovery time of patients, and draft guidelines to prevent erros in the future.

Pros: Pharmacovigilance Opportunities
Cons: Logistical challenges with the Down Referral system

Laboratory & Blood Services Coordination

I have 12 years work experience in the health sector both in the private and the public sector. I have 9 years in management. I have had the privilege of working for the Gauteng Department of Health, where I am currently overseeing a project named Electronic Gate-Keeping. My duties include: advising management on intervention strategies, drafting standard operating procedures, developing operational plans, coordinating meetings, liaising with different departments and coordinating the Laboratory and Blood Transfusion Services. I hold a Master’s degree in Business Administration, National Diploma in Biomedical Technology and certificates in Project Management (Fundamentals and Advanced). My experience in the Department of Health has been invaluable and allowed me to critically assess my notions of what my strengths and developmental areas are.

Pros: Making a difference in a patient's life
Cons: There is no growth in the directorate

Many obstacles with very good learning curves.

My responsibilities as a community service medical officer include patient consultations, working with nurses and allied health professionals if referrals are needed as well as supervision of interns. Overtime work is done in the emergency department at a community healthcare centre. A typical work day involves seeing 40 patients on average. I have a strong relationship with my coworkers, due to the fact that we see a large number of patients daily, good team work and communication are skills I polished well.

Pros: Confidence in terms of self reliance and decision making.
Cons: Large volumes of patients to be seen in a short staffed unit, as well as a lack of resources.

Norms and standards and Ideal Facility Framework

I enjoy assisting facilities with developing their quality improvememnt plans and self assessments. I have learnt to develop holistic approaches in developing quality improvement plans for the province. The most challenging aspects of my job are shortage of resources such as tools of trade and human resources

Pros: visiting the different facilities daily (different scenarios)
Cons: the shortage of resources

Excellent team builder and leader

I'm a fun loving person who loves working hard. I don't tolerate incompetence, I believe in working towards improving yourself no matter the circumstances or difficulties. I know and believe that I am a good leader. I always lay a foundation to build on., do that and you will always be great and ready for all that comes your way. Lack of growth is a problem where I work, not enough opportunities for young people and not enough change to help build the institution or make life easier for all.

Pros: Exposure
Cons: Lack of opportunities

My most ever challenging working time

Having worked for a state department that was at the time that I joined having a bad image and targeted by everyone including political parties, I was confronted by a big task of rebuilding the reputation and inspire confidence of the public, especially those who use public health facilities. My colleagues assisted a lot because I couldn’t do this task alone. I learnt that patience, team work, and thorough research are key to the kind of work I’m supposed to do. I enjoyed my interaction with journalists and fellow colleagues, especially my subordinates who showed me support at all times. I was mostly challenged by a situation where I couldn’t get information and not meeting deadlines.

Pros: Great opportunity to excel and do what I like
Cons: No time for family and social life
