Life and times of a passionate nurse

A typical day at work would start with me opening up the clinic. Counting stock Dealing with patients who are coming in for repeat treatment Assisting walk in patients with whatever they need I am 2IC when the clinic manager is not around. I have a great respect for people overall and this makes my job a whole lot easier, as I am able to relate to my colleagues and patients. Being a nurse has taught me compassion, it has taught me patience, it has taught me to appreciate life as everyday, you're exposed to people who have far less and are suffering from all kinds of issues, but they're still able to smile and be happy. The lessons I've learnt and the genuine relationships I've built with my patients has lead to my 100% TB cure rate for the past 7 years as well as my ability to get 300+ people onto the HIV/AIDS treatment, because to me, nursing is not a job but a passion.

Pros: Exposure to supervising, managing
Cons: I'm a single mom and sometimes, not being there for my daughter's school things because of work, has been difficult since her father passed away.

Good platform for growth in relation to human resource management and strategic planning

As a medical manager my responsibilities are primarily centred around clinical governance in order to optimise clinical outcomes within the Maternal and Child Health Block of a large hospital in Gauteng. This entails direct management of medical doctors within the block and giving oversight on the auditing, review and subsequent improvement of clinical outcomes. The biggest learning curve in my current employment is managing human resources in my direct line of management, this job has offered me an opportunity to manage larger teams of professionals than I was previously accustomed to. While this was my area of learning the most enjoyable part of my employment is strategic planning on how to improve services and ultimately clinical outcomes within the block. The most challenging aspects of the job include the inefficiencies within public health care.

Pros: Wide networking with various stakeholders in the healthcare sector at all levels of government: local, province and national
Cons: Limited opportunity for development and growth, a lot of hours are spent within the crisis management sphere leaving limited space for proactive practice and planning

My experience

My name is Ephraim Shambane, a 42 year old Professional nurse. I applied for this position because I meet the requirements stipulated on the advertisement of the post. I also believe I am the right candidate for the position and as a nurse highly exposed to HIV/ AIDS related environment and research, I would fit in perfectly to the company. I have been exposed to retail settings working for clicks, working with HIV infected and exposed clients and understand the environment at a government clinic. I also have a Nimart certificate. I also have experience working at HCT clinic, ANC, EPI, family planning, emergency room and mental health where I gained experience on how to handle blood specimen and drawing of blood specimen from both adults and paediatric patients. I believe with my experience I can be an asset to the company and the community at large.

Pros: Great opportunity for growth
Cons: bad human resource

Severely Restricted Budgets

A typical day involves receiving requests for advice on how to proceed with projects and repairs on problem hospitals and equipment. I then respond by either going to site and writing a report or by negotiating with PSPs or Public Works (GDID) as to the best way forward. I am also involved in the planning of a 550 bed hospital in the Soweto area. This involves working with the respective Health Planner and reviewing the design. Because of the many challenges and risks at our public health facilities which very often involve infrastructure I tend to propose innovative solutions such as remote condition monitoring and simple pragmatic solutions for risk reduction and prevention of possible injury to persons and damage to equipment and property. Often budget constraints prevent project implementation. I also manage a small group of , works inspectors, technicians and technical engineers. Best Regards, MARK L. Gordon (083) 355 9354

Pros: Implement Projects
Cons: Budget Constraints

My 25 years experience in the industry helps with everyday problem solving.

The position that I am in now is not challenging because of my work experience in the industry. A typical work day is boring and also frustrating as my advise that can make a big difference is not considered. I feel that I have good communication skills with my subordinates whom consider me a good manager. I love that I can get across to my staff and make them understand decisions and challenges that they face.

Pros: Communication with Heads of Departments and constant problem solving
Cons: Travel distance from home to work and long hours
