Student-driven

I am responsible for developing an institutional academic literacies program. A typical day at work: arriving at work around 7am and conducting academic literacies workshops with students across four faculties. The workshops are tailor made for each faculty, department, lecturer and student. Some of my workshops are from invites from colleagues who may have identified a need/limitation in their students. So collaboration with colleagues is important. Each term I travel to benchmark academic literacies programs from other South African universities. This allows me to see what other academic literacies practitioners are busy with and enables me to adapt my strategies and learn from other institutions. I have learned that working in isolation is the worst decision to make . Instead asking for help and suggestions from colleagues , scholars and even the students provides an opportunity for growth. My biggest challenge is providing the best literacies program that will cater for the 21st century graduate.

Pros: Collaboration is encouraged
Cons: Poor leadership

Learning curve

It's a very chilled environment with good people. I have enjoyed writing for the universities publications and meeting people from all walks of life. I have also had the opportunity to study towards my B-tech in Marketing and obtained it this year, in April. As much as the environment is chilled it requires one to meet deadlines and live by the values. My typical working day involves getting to work check emails, check planner depending on the day it is. On Mondays we have meetings where we talk about the upcoming events, what needs to be done. I also help out with the front desk administration. The most challenging aspect of my job is having to attend an event outside campus, I have not been informed of in time, working with no recorders and other useful tools that can assist us as Writers to do our jobs efficiently.

Pros: great opportunity to learn and get exposure
Cons: No growth opportunities

Excellent learning curve

That’s an interesting question. I love Mondays, mostly because the day flies by in a flash. On a given day, during the early hours you will find me speaking to the colleaques, finding out – proactively finding out how their week was, meeting with my supervisor for half hour to communicate about customers needs and organizing the schedules around the client’s priorities. I do this on every saturday as i only work satuedays and sundays,so that the rest of the week is well organized and we can effectively use our team’s time in exceeding client’s expectations and avoid weekly surprises. My role involves extensive responsibilities and staying organized is not an option

Pros: great with customer care
Cons: proscratinate

My work experience

My job is to ensure that suppliers are paid in time. To make sure that Service Level Agreements are renewed in time to avoid late payments. My relationship with workers is excellent. I have learnt a lot since this job requires me to know and adhere to Procurement policies. I have learnt to be more effective as i am working on dead lines. Since i have been doing this job for more than five years now, i feel that the job is no more challenging. Even though there are changes there and there in policies at times, but it is not something that gives you sleepless night. I love challenge, hence i am still studying to develop myself.

Pros: I don't see any opportunity for promotion
Cons: No long working hours
