University of Limpopo Reviews

Excellent learning curve from a professional institution

The institution provides a good platform for advancement in research, as well as entry level experience. On a weekly basis there was exposure to unique problems pertaining to lab-scale industrial chemical reactions along with a requirement to prepare reagents and solutions for each experiment. Since this an academic institution, there are further opportunities to enhance ones academic career profile.

Pros: Great opportunity for gaining experience and publishing research articles
Cons: Underpaid

Learning everday

I interact with students daily to assist them with their research projects and assignments. As well as any library and information service queries. I have learnt to be more patient and managing my time. The relationship with co-workers is fine, because majority of them are my former classmates. I enjoy daily interaction with students and staff, as I learn something new almost everyday. The most challenging part is the workload, as sometimes I have to training students on how to use library and information services. Then I also have to attend information request daily to satisfy our clients

Pros: Great opportunity to further studies
Cons: Overworked

Excellent communication, Report writting, analytical skills and leadership management

It was a good place to work at, being a laboratory assistant has taught me to be self driven, independent, working under pressure while preparing different reagents. working with different students, different attitude day by day. I had a good relationship with most of my colleagues, together with my supervisors. What excites me most is my co workers believed in me,.they had faith in me knowing that i wont disappoint them when coming to our work, i was always chosen as a driver of the team.I had some challenges there and there especially if i had to prepare a media that i had never prepare before without being supervised and yet being told that the media am preparing is very challenging but am glad i was focused and made it at the end after some few hiccups.

Pros: Interacting with co workers
Cons: working long hours even on weekend

Salary curve

I am not sure of my current salary but due to my work experience it sounds fair enough. The job has many technicians and they work almost similar work. There are lots of assistants who can to do similar duties. It require some sacrifices at some point to sustain position.

Pros: There is a great opportunity for promotion
Cons: There is lot of work with many duties to be fullfilled

Preparation for real working environment

Working at my department gives me ability to communicate with other collegues as well as student I encounter on a daily bases. Even though the working hours are not as much as in other big companies, I feel ready to tangle any type of work as long as I have gathered proper training. I have learned that to have a good working evnvironment, one needs to listen to others and also give advice were necessary inorder to avoid conflicts. What i enjoy about my job is that, in the process of assisting students I also get to learned most of the aspect i had missed during my studying time, making me an expert. The most challenging aspect about my job is dealing with students who do not want to be helped or ignorant ones, it always draw me back to the board to explain what I think is easy but i get to work with them until clarity.

Pros: Stepping stone towards greatness
Cons: too short working hours

Exposure and Learning new things always

I was learning new things each an every working day since I was working with scientific stuff and doing experiments, so sometimes I was working under pressure because of too much complicated work. The relationship with coworkers was awesome since we were like siblings and covering each others back and we were working like ninjas because we were able to reach our target everyday at work. I learned to be independent regardless of the pressure and also to be creative and accurate. I enjoy molecular biology laboratory work especially when I work with microorganisms, extracting oil or DNA and preparing Agar medium. I just enjoy any laboratory procedure because I like challenges. The most challenging part is when you get meaningless results after you went through lot of steps for a certain scientific problem.

Pros: Discovering new things and gaining knowledge
Cons: Long working hours and always studying.

Excellent learning opportunity

I worked as a Mathematical and Computer Science lab assistant. The lab assistant work we had to work for long us helping student with different programming problems. The Maths as a tutor we tutored for selected hours. And for this experience I learned to be patient with people, develop a strong ethic of communication, it helped to become punctual at most cases and flexible with work pressure, cause at times you would find that I have my own deadlines but still manage to effectively tutor and assist. The two position prepared me work pressure, analytical skills, flexibility, communication skills and punctuality.

Pros: Head tutor
Cons: 9-12
