IT leadership in NGO environment

The typical working day is filled planning for the department, providing operational oversight, managing spending, stakeholder management, and providing support and leadership to the team. The IT team is cohesive and works as a unit. I have learnt to make difficult and swift decisions in a fast paced environment where variables are ever changing. I enjoy leading a team of committed staff who are ever supportive and creative. The most challenging part of the job is the uncertainty that inherently comes with the NGO environment due to unpredictability of funding.

Pros: Great opportunity to be creative
Cons: Lack of work life balance

I have excellent communication, listening, interpersonal, negotiation and computer skills

The working conditions at my current organization are very conducive. We work from 8 to 4h30. Since I have the ability to work in a team as well as individually I find very simple to work with my team even under stressful conditions. I have learnt a lot about the cervical cancer program especially the prevention and treatment thereof. I enjoy being a given tasks with deadline because I find it challenging and I am up for any challenge when it comes to my job. Patients who are lost to follow up make it difficult for us to complete a task for a quarter.

Pros: I am willing to learn at anytime when given an opportunity.
Cons: I am flexible can work shifts and public holidays when required.

Challenging work environment

Current day at RTC is very challenging due to the unexpected demands of various regions to meet objectives. A typical workday would be planned and task oriented but unfortunately due to prior year errors an incorrect treatment of Accounts Payable processes a huge backlog needed to be addressed on a daily basis. An webbased procurement process creates a complicated process for regions to comply, whom in turn choose to bypass proper procedures. A finance team of 4 junior staff need to be advised and micro managed on a daily bases to ensure adherence to financial principles. I throughly enjoyed training them and equipping them with the correct skill set. I have learnt that you should know everything from bottom level to top level as uncertainties can happen at any time. Due to the lack of attendance of the financial manager I had taken on the roles and responsibilities to manage the team at any time.

Pros: Good company benefits
Cons: Long working hours, lack of management communications

Learning Curve

My role as fixed asset controller has touched me to be very patient, also to pay attentive attention to details and able to anylize thoroughly, it has also made me realized the importance of the assets within the group, I enjoy my role because it keeps me on the toes to ensure all assets are accounted for, typical day at work, it’s always a busy day, I have learnt to be independent and able to answer should questions arise, what’s more challenging is dealing with people who doesn’t understand the importance of your own work, e.g. people who doesn’t take full responsibility of what they are accounted for like laptop, relationship with colleagues is always good sorely because they understand my attitude towards my task.

Pros: I would love to see myself in a better position, supervisory or management
Cons: 12 hrs

There's no growth

If you still a junior and want to gain more knowledge and exposure it's definitely not a company to go to, everyone is relaxed, a million are hired to do something that could be done by 2 people, everyone is friendly, working hours are great but there's no overtime payment you get a day (s) off but it cannot be more than 2 days

Pros: Flexible hours
Cons: Lack of reporting structure

Typical day at work

When I get at work i check emails that came in after I left the day before or before I got to work. Reply to email directed at me or needs my attention. Whenever a co-worker comes in and needs help I assist. Help clients that comes in needing info or looking for anything that i can assist with. Typing of documents when/if needed. Making sure that documents typed are correct and read by supervisor/manager before printing. Making sure stationery is sufficient enough.

Pros: Not much opportunity
Cons: Long hours for minimal payment
