Rand Refinery Reviews

Excellent career start point.

The relationship with colleagues is the best, it’s a second family. Getting up to go to work is not a misery because of the great working relationship and the focus of one goal of a team to improve and optimize processes whilst delivering products to customers on time. Being pushed out of my comfort zone is really a challenge but it really made me grow both personally and professionally. I have full admiration for the supportive, collaborative team-mates with an amazing, positive and hilarious team leaders.

Pros: Development opprotunities
Cons: Working all week for long hours

Implementation phase

My current role is an opportunity to implement what I have learnt in the industry form the past 10 years, the role involves Managing of an asset worth more than R100m, it involves managing a budget worth more than R20m, it involves managing Gold and Silver inventory, managing people and overseeing execution of Capita Projects.

Pros: General Manager's Role
Cons: Working in a high security area

My day starts with production feedback meeting in which production stats and imminent plans get shared with the team for efficient continuous operation to avoid bottlenecks and recurrence process interruptions. Then later during the day after scanning through my mails and completion of critical reports go lead the team to ensure that daily-targeted goals are achieved. My relationship with co-workers do not impact my job other than they improve workplace satisfaction (by up to 96 percent!) and keep you sane. I have learn to project hope and positivity, while keeping the organization focused by combating weakness, negativity and mediocrity. I have also learnt to always have a plan, and ensure I am constantly moving the ball towards the goal. What I enjoy the most is to run a safe and profitable business. My challenges aspects of my job involves working with unfocused leadership who spend more time on pointless meetings.

Pros: Leaving a great legacy for continual safe and profitable business.
Cons: Long working hours

How work is everyday

I perform daily samples analyses and trouble shoot if needed. I receive and report samples on LIMS daily. We work so good as team communicate enough. The most challenging aspect is doing trials, we take long hours doing the analysis

Pros: Gretat eposure to new things
Cons: long hours

Fast leaner

I started as a clerk for about 4months at rand refinery and my contract ended then I was called for an operator position, me and my co-workers are responsible of melting different material in the furnace and produce a sample of that material and an ingot so it can be processed in other department. we are working as a team of 3 and we understand each other even though we sometimes experiencing some challenges but we do sort those challenges or differences out. I learnt most processes in the company, treating the material from one furnace to the next till the final product, and the chemical equations and accuracy in measuring. I'm enjoying working with numbers and chemical equation and processes. we're too exposed to high temperatures and heavy material that are being lifted manually into the furnaces those are my two aspect that are very challenging to me

Pros: great oppotunities for growth in the company
Cons: unsatable shifts

Great learning curve

Working for Rand refinery is good, and challenging at the same time. I worked in the Smelter department as Instrument Technician, I then moved to the project department to help with various projects eg. Ducon scrubber project , update Instrument drawings and upgrade on chlorine station . I work overtimes and standby on monthly basis. I now work at the services department as instrument technician and services supervisor . I have good relationship with my co-workers and they respect me because of my leadership style. I enjoy interacting with people and working on projects. The most challenging part about my job is the call outs and the pressure from production .

Pros: great opportunity for growth
Cons: long working hours

My company review

I normally get to work at 07h30 to do a walk the go and check my emails. At about 08h00, we attend a production meeting where as Production Managers, we cover safety topics, give production feedback and share a plan for the day. The meeting last for 30 minutes. The go to the office, reply emails and complete reports. Go back to the plant to check progress, go to lunch. After lunch I check my emails again and head straight to the plant to check progress and assist where it's necessary and knock off at 16h30. My relationship with my coworkers is great. There is trust, mutual respect, open communication and accommodate diversity amongst ourselves. I have learnt to work efficiently under the most stressed situations. I always approach my work with a positive attitude and an open mind. I enjoy collaboration, every one shares the same vision and dedicated to organisational mission. The most challenging aspect of the job is unavailability of conducive feed materials since gold production has declined.

Pros: Great opportunity for growth
Cons: Work politics but I know how to manage them. The issue is they waste valuable time.
