Markham Reviews

Great learning

Learnt not be friends with the staff members. To diarize important dates and complete tasks timeously. Delegates tasks and monitor the progress extensively and time frame to be applied as well. I have learnt to pop in the store anytime especially when I was off, it kept the team on their toes knowing that anytime I can come to the store,so they had to be on their game. Team work goes a long way and it's beneficial for the business. Planning your day makes magic and work becomes easy and enjoyable. Count stock everyday to track the losses.

Pros: Career growth
Cons: Short staff

Leadership

Its a very fast paced environment, with very welcoming employees and I have learned that team work pays up good and I enjoy helping others achieve thier targets and see growth and the most challenging aspects of the job is that when the business is slow it get much harder to reach or maybe exceed targets.

Pros: Opportunity for growth in a supporting environment.
Cons: You get less time to spend with friends and family as you are required to be at work 7 days a week.

How to be a good leader

I enjoyed been a leader, been part of youthful team. I enjoying service customers and educating customer about our brand, our products and services. Educating staff members to how to assist customers and retailing staff about product knowledge. Most challenging things is how to motivate staff during a bad month of not meet target of our KPIs.

Pros: Educating staff about new products
Cons: Not meet KPI target

I’ve learned lot of things at Markham but there is no growth

Being in retail requires you to work as a team and trust each other with the business and honesty it the key if we work well with each other obviously it shows that we can work as a team and we can conquer everything and our customers will be happy.

Pros: opportunities they do come and they tell us about them to apply if it something that needs to apply for
Cons: Working in a retail industry it not good you have to work extra hours and when you check your pay check find out they didn’t pay for that extra time

- Team manager , Salesman, Visual merchandiser

• Top sales person (BRANDS) in 2017 • From being a normal sales person to someone who does the banking and responsible for receiving as well as counting stock (trustworthy) and also motivate my subordinate. • I learnt how to listen attentive, critical and appreciative that really improved my customer service and how to handle most difficult customers, that resulted where I had customers who appreciated my service in such a way that they even ask for me when they came to the store, but then I always try convincing them to see the fact that it not just me but it’s the company’s service, so that they stay loyal even on my absence.

Pros: I can run a store / manage a store
Cons: I sometimes work 12 hours

Constant promotions

Is a great company to start a career with constant promotions, but the salary varies from different branches, I'd tie in a bigger branch salary might be R4900 and from small branch might be R4300, the only challenge is when one works in a branch situated in a mall as most malls close even around 10pm, the only issue is that small branches don't get the same treatment at bigger branches like product and other systems are not in placed.

Pros: Constant promotions
Cons: Management from bigger stores look down at other small stores

It has been a great learning curve but the employees are not acknowledged for their work

•Working at Markham has been great giving me skills and experience. •The hours are long and there are less day offs. •Employees don’t get along which brings the team spirit down. •Growth in the company is very rare.

Pros: Great environment to improve customer service.
Cons: Long working hours and less day offs.

Excellent learning curve

I work as a general worker. Eveyday i have a duty, like when my mentor said i have to be in a till, i have to be in and dealing with all the job under the cash desk. Since i am a trainee manager i do everything inside the store. We have a good communication inside as a staff, we all respect each other. but there are those challenges we face. Like to deal with the customer issues. But i love and enjoy my job

Pros: This is a great opportunity for me as a retail student, as i have mentioned on my CV. I would like to do anything in the industr, and i am ready to face each and every problem and solve it. I promise i will be a useful material to the industry.
Cons: 8 hours a day
