Department of Defence Reviews

Good learning curve

I am first a soldier before a nurse and that has built my discipline and leadership skills as an officer. The military has no comfort zone. I enjoy teaching my subordinates and I believe in creating a favourable working environment for yourself and enjoy what you do. When faced with challenges I face them head on as i believe they are only there to build me. I lately developed the love to work nightshift because that's my opportunity to enforce team work and harmony between day and night shift. What I enjoy about my work is being able to help the vulnerable and also learning to work with people with different personalities. I must say that the most challenging aspects about my work is dealing with difficult family members ,management anddoctors because of military ranks play a vital role and everyone becomes the boss and that needs certain skills that have been acquired both during military and nurse training to manage

Pros: Enhanced personal skills
Cons: Burnout

Office management and supply support

I am one who started working in a corporate compnies, now I feel working for government is not challenging. While I need to explore in my career if feel like I am stuck. I started working as a secretary and received a certificate of being the best secret in 2009. Worked as a Facility clerk and payment clerk as well. I really need to go for a new environment and challenge.

Pros: learned that the purpose for working there is to serve the country. but found out that there no lot of exposure for me as a non uniform member. as they are lots of activities done by only uniform member and is as civilians we also left out.
Cons: 7hours in a day sometimes less than that as I have mentioned that they are lot of activities taking place.

I am intersted in this position as it appeals directly to my passion for working with people.

Working for Internal Audit and Risk Management whereby I was dealing with people each and everyday. Attending trainings and meetings of all different directorates of the department. Taking minutes where necessary. Planning Audit and conduct audit assignment as per audit plan. Currently I ma working as finance intern under supplier payments whereas I'm dealing with people, paying invoices for the suppliers, Handling queries received from suppliers and help companies with remittance advices. Working for different sections Thought me how to interact with people from different cultures, also how to behave professional when dealing with different people. How to work under pressure, to be proactive, Time management and to meet deadlines for the tasks. I enjoy working with people which made me to have good relationship with my co-workers. .

Pros: Working for Deparment of defence its an interesting environment whereby you have to deal with uniform and non- uniform members. Thought me respect, discipline
Cons: The period working in Defence thought how to interact with your senior. How to dress professional.

Getting excellent exposure to all fields related to budget and risk control

The department of defence is a very busy department especially in budget management division. Each and every employee has certain duties that he/she must fulfill before the end of the business day. as employees we tend to help each other accomplish the objective for the day whenever we have hiccups, we lend a helping hand where needed. During my period in the department i have learnt pretty much, below is a summary of what i have learnt: The ability to interpret financial statutes and related prescripts. understand and interpreting national treasury documentations writing of oral communications such as minutes, memorandum. routine letters etc. functioning within a team and individual and computer skills.i enjoyed working on budget reallocation matters and control used for reallocating.

Pros: a perfect department for entery level candidates to learn more.
Cons: None so far

I now have experience in customer service, financial, administration, computer, supervisor skills.

DOD is the best company to start working for as an employee because its teaches how to work with people and whole lot of other things; department of defence is one of government department that does not concentrate on one line of work eg office administration, finance, pharmacy, nursing, auditors etc

Pros: Limited opportunity for promotion
Cons: 40 hours a week

Excellent for security reasons

I have thoroughly enjoued my years within the Department of Defence. I couldn't have gained better experience that which I was blessed with. Great security jobwise, but It was my time to.leave and explore other avenues. I originally came from the private sector and just felt I should do what I love amd that is working with broader public and yearned the competitive edge thereof.

Pros: Permanent employment
Cons: No room for growth
