City of Cape Town Reviews

Excellent learning curve

A typical work day includes diary management, dealing with correspondence, interfacing with customers about service delivery matters, minute taking, speech writing, procurement via SAP, arranging events. I have had to learn when I joined this office, i.e. speech writing, compilation of agenda, procurement via SAP. What I enjoy most about my work here is interfacing with the community members regarding their service delivery matters. Working with politicians can be prove to be a challenge at times, as they don't always understand that you also report to someone else administratively, and the admin person always reminds you of policies, when politicians expect you to do certain things, which is not allowed.

Pros: Great opportunity for promotion if you are in the administrative field
Cons: If you don't have a degree, opportunity for progress is basically nil

Learning curve

More administration than technical work. It gives me opportunity and motivation to apply for work as I need more technical work at this stage of my career.

Pros: Great working environment
Cons: Less opportunity for promotion

Opportunities

Working for the City is a great opportunity for anyone. It has great opportunities for promotion however being in the correct department for your specialities and personality is of utmost importance. The City treats their staff well however there are large descrepencies between departments.

Pros: Great benefits, bonus, and working Hours
Cons: Monotonous work

Ideal company to work for

I'm working for Solid Waste management which is the biggest department within the City. The department mostly consist of operations performed by elementary Workers. My role is to manage capital and operational finances for the department, develop staff to their next possible levels, dealing with different projects, human resources and more involved with unions.

Pros: Potential growth
Cons: No mind stretching

Graduate at the City of Cape Town

The days vary from busy to quiet, its how you deal with your workload and pressure. The co-workers are amazing! we all respect one another's cultures and differences, you do however get a few rotten apples out of the bunch, again, it is how you deal with the situation. I have learnt to become more open minded and driven. I enjoy working with a diverse group of people, always open to learning! Some challenges are the people, not everyone does that they are expected to do, so it kind of makes your job difficult.

Pros: Great experience
Cons: limited exposure

The job is good for gaining experience but bad for building capital.

We are a group of ladies who go into the communities and capture data of social issues.. we do surveys by going door to door or when we capture data about truancy we have meetings at schools... we collect all the issues we have captured and send it through to social development and early childhood development sectors to resolve the problems as soon as possible.. We worked well together and had alot of training programmes where we picked up many skills including first aid training and basic computer literacy training. I mostly enjoyed finding confidence as I am a introvert and the most challenging part of our job was working during times where it was dangerous to walk (gang violence).

Pros: Great work experience
Cons: Low pay for long hours

Stepping stone

The Company offers job security but very little opportunities to further your career .Management work ethic is putrid they offer no support to junior staff(department specific)

Pros: Great colleagues
Cons: Working shifts, very stagnant no opportunities

My excellent working experience with the city of Cape Town

I was a clerk at City of Cape Town for more than 3 years. I have gain so much experience through the different contracts that they have gave me . The team I was with was very good and motivating .I have worked for one department but with different sectors and 3 different managers . what I enjoyed most was the fact that my team was the best team when it comes to work staff . We used to share ideas on how to build our team . The most challenging part was when we were needed to finish 5000 contract per day that was my experience.

Pros: great team work
Cons: 8 hours

Excellent work experience

i am enjoying every moment spent at my work, everyday its a new learning. i am exposed to all the sections of the branch and that has broaden my experience. i am dealing very well with my management team and the staff, we have developed a good work ethics and morals. I have learnt much on the administrative side og business as my section is managing admin functions, further more, experience gained on Water and Waste Water operations has broaden the scope of my experience. the most challenging aspect of the function is the interdepartmental communication that is lacking.

Pros: great opportunity for experience
Cons: No growth

I have a degree in project management, and ND in Enterprise Development

my day start by having a meeting with the team for 15 minutes. I have a healthy relationship with my employers. SAP system, sharepoint2016 what I enjoyed most is the flexibility in the working time. the most challenging part of my work it's when I'm using a new system, I always try to make sure that I do my best although I'm not used to that system.

Pros: great opportunity for self development
Cons: working environment
