Department of Social Development Reviews

A very great place to work

The culture at social development is very great; people treat each other like family, a very great place to work. I enjoyed every day that I went to work and I strongly believe that all of the skills that I have been picking up from the internship will be truly beneficial. My supervisors are very wonderful people, up to date with everything new about IT and they would even let you tag along to IT seminars with big organisations. I have had numerous roles at the department of social Development in a very short period of time. They gave me opportunities to attend courses that improved my people skills and my supervisors also gave me opportunities to explore new options and run with ideas that might equip me for the future, and management cares about our career advancement as interns and they always check how are we progressing and if the supervisors are teaching us all we need to make it out there in the IT industry.

Pros: go the opportunities to attend courses that improved my skills
Cons: firmware in some of the devices are outdated

Challenging position

As a class educator in a juvenile centre I've excelled in my management skills and ability to plan and work under pressure. In the larger facility there is a general neglect in the operations and learning of the educational sector. This is because the department does not specialize in education and ends up with a watered down version of what is truly needed to create a well run, nurturing environment.

Pros: Stimulating and challenging position
Cons: Poor management

No growth

Good relationship with co-workers and team work is the order of the day. I have learn on my own for example how to write professional reports and present matters in court without any support from supervisors and managers. I enjoy statutory work and field work. There is lot of work with limited time. No support and lack of working tools. The salary is very low as compared to the every day duties that one is doing. There is no growth.

Pros: Not applicable
Cons: Burn out

Great learning experience

Working at department of Social Development was a great experience. I worked well with everyone from the security guard to the chief director. Department of Social Development exposed me to working with stakeholders and travelling south Africa while facilitating their HIV and AIDS prevention programmes which helped me to be able to stand in front of people and facilitate. In my work at the department I was an intern which meant I did a bit of everything, I was taking minutes during meetings, conduct travelling itinerary for the officials and do substantial and travelling claims. When in the office I would communicate with officials from other provinces to ensure they received the material I had couriered. I would set calender for the director and deputy directors.

Pros: Exposure to do facilitation
Cons: No opportunity for permanent employment

Average learning curve

My experience was not according to my studies as the Financial system are not Pastel accounting or Quick book. It was more administration. Even the audit analysis I did was not even used as our only aim was to fund pre schools and any reports I did were not used by my senior as they did not see a need it. The administration was so exhausting as we have been dealing with more than 200 organizations.

Pros: Working with organizations in disadvantage areas
Cons: The was more administration to be done and exhausting at time

Best training mentors available to assist me

My overall duties were to conduct administrative work that included checking whether the salaries received are correct and corresponds with the time sheets provided by employees. I would be involved in checking and uploading of daily time sheets. I was also part of the recruiting and selecting process.. My relationships with my co-workers was professional and we understood the importance of working together as a team. I enjoyed the fact that each day I learnt something new withing the organisation and the fact that I received support from my mentors and supervisors. The most difficult aspect about my job was dealing with grievances within the workplace and we needed to be neutral and keep issues like these confidential

Pros: Opportunity to learn new policies
Cons: Inability to get placement after completing the internship
