Volunteer experience

The average day includes assisting students with practical and educational skills equipping them for assignments and practical work. The Lecturer and other demonstrators meet before the practicals to discuss a way to better engage with the students.

Pros: Get to work with students and increase your expertise.
Cons: Few hours and thus less pay

Always determined to achieve optimal results

Having worked with some organizations in different capacities, and interacted with people from multicultural backgrounds for over 10 years now, I have developed team building and multi-tasking skills.

Pros: Proficient in statistical analysis softwares (Stata, SPSS, Eviews among others)

Excellent learning curve

It is worth the experience. I personally grew in my ability to research and apply the research to the task at hand,for development purposes. A typical day would include interacting with sampled participants. The working hours were appropriate and other team members were supportive.

Pros: Flexible working hours, greater exposure to the minibus industry.

Multi tasking

Using appropriate data to refer students to appropriate interventions. • Developing strategies to monitor and track student progress. • Interacting with School and Faculty teaching and learning committees and other student support structures

Growth prospects

Crude staffers, management too passive to deal with standoffish and cold staff. Company provides some platforms to voice grievances. Work-life balance is okay. Good prospects for promotion and personal growth.

Great experience

I am a qualified tutor and able to deal with kids very well. I tutor Roedean, Kingsmead, St Johns and Parktown students currently on weekends. I would be a great au pair because I love children, am a safe driver and have the correct working hour availability.

Excellent Culture

I enjoy working part time at the University of the Witwatersrand. Warteinweiler library assists many students and staff with academic and research needs. A friendly and open management structure.

Opportunities and learning curve

Data Collection/Analysis using Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP)- Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) Extraction; Run Gels; Prepare Samples to be analysed- Perform PCRs, learn and develop skills in basic genetic analyses- Assist in Growth Chamber Experiments; Watering Plants & Measure Soil Moisture- Field Work, Site Visits; Measure Traits & Count Individuals- Scientific Events Planning; Assist Design Concept & Contribute to the Events.

Its been ok - limited growth.

my current work now is not really challenging - has a lot of attention to detail on figures as the job is more reporting intensive but my problem is that it hinges mostly on other senior staff yet my output falls on deaf ears because what is meant to be done with my efforts simply is not going anywhere. this has been a big aspect of my work and i miss being great at what i do.

Pros: great opportunities to study more academia.
Cons: promotion and advancement in the working structure is slow if at all.
