University of The Witwatersrand Reviews

Research development

Work at the University of the Witwatersrand is good. A typical day at work involves preparing for tutorials, reading scientific research articles and working on my own research. Relationships with co-workers are quite close as we usually rely on each other for tutorials and research progress meetings. It is easy to make friends who you can always trust to give you honest feedback on your work. The most challenging aspects of my job is keeping up with deadlines and come up with a novel approach for my work.

Pros: Great opportunity for research
Cons: Delayed feedback from supervisor

Arranging meetings, appointments, and executive travel. Answering phone calls and taking messages. Maintaining folders on servers. Recording meeting minutes. Liaising with teams and units. Tracking petty cash. Covering reception.

Pros: The relationship and rapport I have built with the person I work for and the appreciation for a job well done.

Excellent learning curve

From being a Social work student to being employed as a Call centre agent at the same institution (University of the Witwatersrand) for customer service such as registration, applications, accommodations and referrals to various faculties provided me with an excellent learning curve and opened my mind to the pressures associated with the position. Now I understand and can offer the professional approach to various customers. The colleagues and my seniors presented approachable attitudes which made the position easy to manage because of the positive atmosphere.

Pros: Great opportunity for experience
Cons: Short contract
