Well organized department

I am responsible for supervising students as they perform their experiments in the laboratory. I also mark practical reports and tutorials. I have good working relationship with my colleagues as we easily swap shifts to accommodate academic assessments. A practical is 3 hours, I supervise one practical a week, A tutorial has similar hours. I have learnt the importance of being prepared for my students. I enjoy being able to help students understand what they have already learnt in class and putting it into application. I also enjoy teaching good laboratory skills and practices to help them get good results. The most challenging aspect is not always knowing the cause of a bad result, thus being unable to assist the student in rectifying it.

Pros: Keeps you in touch with your fundamental chemistry
Cons: Marking

A challenging and stimulating environment, which requires a skills set that spans not only the HR discipline but also encompasses other disciplines like legal, finance, procurement, health and safety, etc. The ability to assimilate and be agile in approach and application to meet the operational needs is rewarding and stimulating. Creativity and problem solving are also on the menu and being able to mentor and guide is an absolute benefit.

Pros: High energy, creativity, challenging

Cover letter

I have a master’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering and extensive knowledge of the mineral processing and hydrometallurgy behaviour associated with ore such as coal, magnetite, ilmenite, nickel, copper and cobalt. As a final year Master candidate at the University of Pretoria, I maintained an exceeding functional office environment while providing tutorials and practical laboratory experiments. I hold a certificate of attendance from Multotec in Magnetics, Gravity, Sampling and Water Treatment Customer Training. I acquired a certificate of attendance from industrial fluidisation South Africa (IFSA) in which I presented and published an article sponsored by Coaltech on Evaluation of ilmenite as a possible medium in a dry dense medium fluidized bed. This article is available in Industrial Fluidization South Africa journal: pp.81-90. Johannesburg: Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, 2017. This project gave me an experience and a better understanding for coal beneficiation.

Pros: Great opportunity of learning
Cons: Contract work

I am currently unemployed but I was a tutor last year

A typical day at the office was constant interaction with students then after tests we would mark intensely. I would share the office space with coworkers and we learnt how to work as a unified group. Tutoring tought me patience, listening skills, multi-tasking and managing my time What I enjoyed was helping someone get a good grade. The challenging aspect was marking essays and granting marks accordingly.

Pros: Salary
Cons: Interference with school
