University of Pretoria Reviews

Perfect learning curve

It’s a great environment to take off your career as chemistry graduate with great exposure to the lab surrounding and basic lab responsibilities. Preparing of solutions for students and demonstrating experiments were key responsibilities which also included operating instruments like AA, UV, GC & IR spectroscopy. I haven’t to say it’s angrea learning curve and it grew me so much that I’m seeing the lab environment differently and confidently and I’m definitely ready to tackle bigger responsibilities at a different industry.

Pros: Great opportunity for learning the lab environment
Cons: Nothing at all

Operational manager:

I interact with lot of internal clients from various departments within the University from the Rectors office, Executive managers, Senior managers, junior managers and other staff on projects. Also interacting with various student bodies. There is also interaction with external clients like the municipality and other government departments, also interacting with Dealing with various clients at various levels has thought me many styles of dealing with them to ensure that their needs are satisfied. I often get so many request on weekly basis and that keep me going daily and to ensure that I keep to deadlines, that is the motivation on my side, I have to be happy that I have managed to keep things done and to make my clients happy weekly.

Pros: Dealing with various departments of the University is an ideal opportunity to learn about various operations within the University in a bigger scale and also learning about various culture and climate. I have also learnt to work in a crossfunctional type of an organisational structure which open doors for broader understanding
Cons: There are always deadline to accomplish on weekly basis dealing with various projects. This encourages more effort in dealing with projects

Pushing performance and loading more work, without any incentives

The University of Pretoria exploit their employees and they do not pay as they suppose to pay. They just expect everyone just to work work work and not think about the employee. E.g. the administrators are overload with work. Two major functions were dumped on the administrators that are already overload with no explanation or any further communication. With these two new functions the administrators are suppose to climb the position level with at least one level. Then you ask yourself what is the people doing that was previously doing this functions. How do their job descriptions look like. Even the cleaners are overloaded with one person doing another persons work and his or own for more than six weeks and the supervisors are just saying they don't know.

Pros: Closing in December for about two weeks without one putting in leave
Cons: Overworked employees with low pay and average benefits

Good learning curve

In terms of studies and career growth if you are an academic you have a very bright future and you will be well looked after. If you are support staff there is little space for promotion. The students are very pleasant to work with. You also get a lot of support from co-workers. Sometimes you are short-handed - too little hours in a day to get everything done. Stress levels can become high if you do not keep your attention focused on your deliverable.

Pros: You can study for free
Cons: Not a lot op opportunity for promotion

Excellent learning curve

Huge University with a lot of study choices. I'm not an employee of the University but rather a student. There isn't much I can say about the University except give a student's point of view.

Pros: Great opportunity to learn
Cons: Long hours studying

I am currently unemployed but I was a tutor last year

A typical day at the office was constant interaction with students then after tests we would mark intensely. I would share the office space with coworkers and we learnt how to work as a unified group. Tutoring tought me patience, listening skills, multi-tasking and managing my time What I enjoyed was helping someone get a good grade. The challenging aspect was marking essays and granting marks accordingly.

Pros: Salary
Cons: Interference with school

Working Day

On an average day I get to work at 8am and leave between 4-5pm. I grade the academic assignments and tests of the BCMP students as well as set up their quizzes and test questions. On select days, such as Fridays I also engage in teaching classes which include the physical examination techniques and taking a history from patients. I have an excellent working relationship with my colleagues and have strong interpersonal bonds with them. I have learnt to be a self starter, to work hard and do my best for my students. The challenging part of my job is that I don't get very much clinical experience which is what I would like to do and I'm not permanently employed. I'm currently working pro bono as I have not been able to secure a clinical associate post anywhere as yet

Pros: Great for experience
Cons: Not being paid or offered a post

Mineral Processing

I respond well to requests from colleagues and students in a timely manner and I am adept at prioritizing multiple ongoing projects. Additionally, I am adept at: • Evaluating alternative medium that can be used to replace Magnetite in the dry dense medium fluidised bed process. • Magnetic Separation, Spirals, Samplers, Solid –Liquid separation, Filter presses, Centrifuges and Water Treatment • Analysing the influence of particle size on metallurgical performance • Evaluating of reagent Rinkalore X as a collector in the Copper Process. I am a self-starter and not scared of challenges. I am also deeply familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, and power point, and adapt quickly to new programs. As a part of your organisation’s team, I hope to bring a resourceful, flexible and hardworking attitude to contribute to your organisation continued growth.

Pros: Great opportunity to learn more
Cons: Routine
