University of Cape Town Reviews

Excellent

My typical day at work is busy and the role is that of office administration and secretarial duties such as assisting with the coordination of events, P-Card clearance, record keeping, processing of payments, travelling arrangements, report writing, social media advertisement, etc. I have a great team and good working relationship. At first is was challenging processing some of the finance documents that adhere to the company policies as there was no on the job training. but managed to build resilience and self taught myself on how to effectively perform all the required work tasks.

Pros: field related and career advancement
Cons: The role occupied is no longer stimulating

Excellent learning curve with good support for students

I enjoyed tutoring so much because in a way I was helping students to understand and adapt better to their course. I was tutoring twice a week, forming discussion groups, creating assessments for learners. The environmental was very conducive to learning which was great. I have learnt mostly to be an understanding person and be accommodating to each and every person because people are not the same and one needs to be passionate when tutoring and in general. I enjoy helping others mostly and seeing progress to what I do. It’s very challenging to speak in front of other people when not fully prepared, so one must come fully prepared and enthusiastic to be able to perform well.

Pros: Great opportunity and room for growth, improves the skills and experience for the cv
Cons: Balance and juggle between work and studying

Very good working environment

I have held three different positions at UCT in the last three and half years. Between September 2016 – June 2019, I was a postdoctoral researcher at the African Institute of Financial Markets and Risk Management (AIFMRM). I enjoyed my experience at AIFMRM. My colleagues were very friendly and willing to collaborate on different projects. Between August 2019 – November 2019, I was a Senior Researcher at SALDRU. Here, I got to lead a team of three junior researchers on an interesting project about youth unemployment in South Africa. During this time, I learned a lot about the South African labour market, especially challenges government faces in its efforts to reduce youth unemployment. It was challenging leading a team of researchers from a distance (as I was based in Uganda for part of the project) but it worked-out very well. For January and February of 2020, I am lecturing an Honours level quantitative course (Mathematics for Economists).

Pros: Type of work (research and teaching) I enjoy
Cons: Short contracts
