Independent Contractor

I am employed at the SABC as an Independent Contractor, as a result of that, I earn per shift, depending how often I am booked to work that month. Considering that I am only booked to work on an average of twice a month, the income I get at SABC does not help sustain my basic needs. However, it is a learning experience and the position I currently hold at SABC has provided much needed training for the advancement and development of my career. A typical day at work is usually from 09:00 am till 16:00 pm, where I meet with a technical producer, I receive a script, I prepare and I record; with the assistance of the producer. I have a respectful and growing relationship with my co-workers, particularly with my technical producer, programme's manager and station manger.

Pros: Opportunity for permanent employent
Cons: Earning per shift

its a great company. We usually work shits and our normal working day starts at 6 in the morning. everyone is allocated their own raw individual raw footages to archive. we interact and share what we have seen on th enews to keep eachother abreast on what is happening on the news. our footage is archived according to the Standard operational procedures of the company. We have metadata that we use to desribe the footager that we see.

Pros: awesome room for growth
Cons: Work starts very early

Lovely environment to work in

The broadcasting industry is a versatile environment to work in, you have new challenges daily. The only challenge that steals ones joy currently is that there's a moratorium not to fill any vacancies so we are left heavily understaffed

Pros: There's lots to learn
Cons: They dont recognise higher learning

Fabulous dynamic brands and amazing personalities.

I enjoy working in the broadcasting industry because each day is different from the last. I receive different briefs which require different creative on-air solutions and tactical responses. I have 60 account executives whom have a dotted line to me as I manage the revenue and portfolio for METROFM which is the biggest commercial radio station in the country with a fiscal target of half a billion rands. Over the past 8 years I have grown both emotionally and professionally at the corporation. I am now looking for a career that will take my experience to new heights.

Pros: Awesome broadcasting opportunity
Cons: Inefficient business model

It was an excellent learning curve

At the SABC NEWS on a regular day we brainstorm for stories for the day, if there are none already on the diary. My relationship with my co-workers was very good. We were like family and did everything together including having lunch. I have learnt to work with people in a team, work under pressure and also facing deadlines. I enjoyed most working under pressure because you get to be in your own zone and the most challenging aspect was coming up with story ideas on dry days.

Pros: Great opportunity for networking
Cons: No salary for four years

Great learning environment

Great learning environment for a junior design. One learns alot about television, production, time management and freedom to express through design. The hardest part about the job is the clients one deals with, they have no time frame or have any time management capabilities and require huge design and animation jobs within a certain time frame.

Pros: Hard working and dedicated.
Cons: Time constraints
