Vast areas of expansion.

A typical day at the office is anything from news gathering in front of your desktop to standing in front of a violent protest with rocks flying over your head and tyres bellowing out thick clouds of smoke. The co-workers here are great there's a great sense of team and working together towards a single goal. I have learnt that one has to be deliberate in any action that one is engaged in, particularly if one wishes to achieve a goal. I've also learnt the value of creating and maintaining contacts. I most enjoy the flexibility of the job. Most of my best work is produced or conceived in the AMs. The most challenging part of this job is remaining relevant to the viewership, creativity even after years and years on the job.

Pros: Flexibility
Cons: Zero chances for promotions or professional growth.

A day in the life

One of the most important aspects of a journalist is being and staying informed. That's what a lot of your day consists of, absorbing information and generating stories from that. There's also the part about going out and actually getting the story. Relationships with all co-workers are light and friendly, the atmosphere is casual. I've learnt a lot about the world of broadcast and journalism.

Pros: Flexible hours
Cons: Not much room for growth, high pressure

Gained enough knowledge to kick start my career

It is a good working environment as co-workers have a good working relationship, the most challenging aspect about my job is that we only at our busiest when and if only there is an upgrade with the system. a day at work would be to assist users with any queries that they may have or do any documentation if needed. I have learnt that i should always be open to learn at all times, be flexible and work under pressure.

Pros: able to liaison with everyone in the department
Cons: no room for growth

Independent Contractor

I am employed at the SABC as an Independent Contractor, as a result of that, I earn per shift, depending how often I am booked to work that month. Considering that I am only booked to work on an average of twice a month, the income I get at SABC does not help sustain my basic needs. However, it is a learning experience and the position I currently hold at SABC has provided much needed training for the advancement and development of my career. A typical day at work is usually from 09:00 am till 16:00 pm, where I meet with a technical producer, I receive a script, I prepare and I record; with the assistance of the producer. I have a respectful and growing relationship with my co-workers, particularly with my technical producer, programme's manager and station manger.

Pros: Opportunity for permanent employent
Cons: Earning per shift

Fabulous dynamic brands and amazing personalities.

I enjoy working in the broadcasting industry because each day is different from the last. I receive different briefs which require different creative on-air solutions and tactical responses. I have 60 account executives whom have a dotted line to me as I manage the revenue and portfolio for METROFM which is the biggest commercial radio station in the country with a fiscal target of half a billion rands. Over the past 8 years I have grown both emotionally and professionally at the corporation. I am now looking for a career that will take my experience to new heights.

Pros: Awesome broadcasting opportunity
Cons: Inefficient business model
