Good entry level to get some work experience

It is a good start for an entry level position, though as time goes a person needs to grow. It is a busy environment, especially end of the year year when it's budget time. A very nice place to in. Working with financial spreadsheet, software licensing payments and the financial reports to the Director has helped me to find strength of my financial background.

Learning curve

Provide assistance with coastal benthic field sampling with specific reference to the preparation and handling of biological samples and equipment;  Provide assistance with the sorting of biological material and the preparation of specimens for laboratory analysis, assist is species identification and record keeping;  Provide assistance in collection of ground-truth data, deployment of sampling equipment, data capturing and data processing, analysis of video and photographic images to facilitate habitat mapping and  Assist with the development of biological identification keys and information guides to coastal benthic species.

Builds work ethic and professionalism

It's an amazing job. They provide training at the beginning of the year which prepares you for what your role should be. The training was very informative and changed my perspective on many things and groomed me to become a well spoken and dedicated employee. A typical day consists of dealing with maintenance issues, student concerns and medical emergencies. This role strengthened my communication skills because I had to communicate efficiently with my colleagues on a 24 hour basis. The only short coming was that emergencies could arise at any hour and Id have to be up and ready to attend to the situation. It was a life changing experience for me.

This job helped me find my footing in the professional environment

A typical day consists of marking and engaging with first year German students. Thereafter I provide resources relevant to their work material and ensure that they have internalised the learning outcomes. Additionally, every week we met with the entire department for updates and troubleshooting.

Great working environment

It is a great experience to work in a diverse company like Rhodes University, I enjoy working here as it challenges me everyday to be a better person. The work pressure and the different people I work with I learn new thing everyday be how to tackle a challenge.

Knowledge based learning with good practical exposure to analytics.

I am currently a student at Rhodes university studying towards an honours degree in BSc Chemistry. I think Rhodes university has provided me with a great foundation by receiving the practical exposure to many chatacterisation and analytical techniques needed for industrial purposes.

Pros: Good practical exposure and education
Cons: Not enough industrial exposure and no pay.

Rhodes University overall work experience

Aa dynamic research university, smallest in the country yet generates some of the highest research outputs. Excellence in all areas is key and part of the organizational culture. Employees are driven and focused. Situated in a small rural town makes it very challenging for outside stakeholders to travel here.

Cons: Low salaries
