The National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) is a public health laboratory service with laboratories across South Africa. Its activities comprise diagnostic laboratory services, research, teaching and training, and production of sera for anti-snake venom, reagents, and media. There are 349 laboratories across the nine provinces.The NHLS employs approximately 6,700 staff. I support in install, troubleshoot and configure desktop application network activity and client’s software (Antivirus Software etc.) perform administration duties with regard to calls allocated and to record actions taken to ensure proper knowledge base is developed Adherence to SOP & adopted software standard.
Pros: to provide diagnostic pathology laboratory services to the national and provincial health departments. There are 349 laboratories across the nine provinces. The NHLS serves approximately 80% of the South African population.

It a good company to work for
Opportunity to learn and grow. I get the opportunity to work with other people, team and other departments. I can get the opportunity to be part of the decision makers for the benefit of the department. i can the opportunity to travel around the country to do asset verification and to assist people to learn how to safeguard company assets and how to maintain the asset register.

Career highlights
When joining ECSA , I was given a responsibility to start a new Supply Chain Business Unit which was implemented successfully with policies and systems that are still running well. In 2004, through my initiatives we moved from manual transactions into electronic way of doing things in Procurement. This is a system that the Department is currently utilising. In National Treasury I got promoted twice within a year in one organisation, bearing in mind it was my first experience in Supply Chain. At StatsSA I was given a role to act as a Director of Supply Chain Management which this position was two levels higher than the position I was occupying. Before joining Statssa they received qualified audits for three successive years in Supply Chain, but after I joined the organisation we never received any qualified/negative audit opinion.

Academic environment
National Health Laboratory services, Virology Department, process specimen from Hospitals and Clinics for virological assessment. We do various tests using Molecular and Serology Assay to find out whether the patient has a viral infection or not. My Job as a Registar is to ensure the quality of the results before we release them, interpret them in a language that a clinician will easily understand and call out urgent results. I work directly with the consultants and technologists, and we have a very close working environment. I have a good professional and personal relationship with all my co workers. besides work we also have weekly seminars and presentations as well as case review meetings. It is a very academic environment. I have learnt a lot about how results are produced and what they mean and how they affect the patients. What I enjoy most about my job is the constant learning and improvement of skills. The most challenging aspect of my job is the academic demands.

Excellent learning and challenging
Learning much in working with a large company like NHLS. And to implement a good service to 800 staff specially during pay day time where all payment quiries I have to attend and explain the reason of the payment quiries. And I also get challenge where we have to appoint new staff doing all the process of document like do reference checks, preparing contract , forwarding document to management for signatures, make sure that every management signed the all documents and phone the best candidate.

Excellent learning curve
National health laboratory services is a very good company who allows you to grow within the industry. My colleagues were great team work is very important. unfortunately I had to go because Iwant to grow in the financial industry.

Data analyst
• Gathering the business requirements of the clients. • Extracting, cleaning, conforming and processing health data using IBM Netezza Data Warehouse platform, Aginity_work bench using SQL, Microstrategy, Excel, and Stata. • Trouble shooting and deriving enhancement of the data tables in order meet the data specifications of the clients. • Writing the data change requests data for specification documents used to development of data_cube and data_marts. • Writing the specification and SQL procedure for development of the reports and and automation. • To identify, recommend and initiate application enhancement requests to ensure that changing business and external stakeholder needs are addressed.

Entry level and growing laboratory skills
My experience includes performing day-to-day laboratory operations to ensure the achievement of highly accurate results. Performing and documenting laboratory support activities, like required maintenance and calibration for laboratory instruments, databases, and tracking and managing inventory in accordance with laboratory procedure; and evaluating laboratory performance of the assays with extensive analysis of assay characteristics, sensitivity, and specificity. At all times I maintained a clean and safe working environment for all laboratory staff and determined and recommended laboratory needs, including lab equipment, supplies, and computer hardware and software systems. I also performed complex experiments, although challenging but still maintained accuracy and effectiveness to the benefit of the company and clients I gained a great ability to relate and work with people as means of operating and promoting project and flexible in a way that I could adapt to new and challenging circumstances.
