National Health Laboratory Services Reviews

Excellent hands on experience

Good relationship management allowed support to meet deadlines and deliver as per the scope. People are important and networking and building good healthy relationships where people work together to achieve set tasks. I most enjoyed working on the overall company strategy, my first, and definitely something I would enjoy doing in the future. Delivering a 5 year strategy from draft to final gloss printed magazine...tight deadlines and high pressure was the most exciting and meeting the deadlines. Previously working in a media role and building relationships of trust with the media and researching and reporting on high profile cases. Information, knowledge and relationship management and not being afraid to be humble in order to attain the right support to achieve goals.

Pros: Opportunity for growth
Cons: People stunting others growth

Great opportunity

I work in a laboratory where a typical day starts at 7h30 am by greeting everyone and asking if there are new developments on outstanding work. I then sit for at least 5 minutes reading work emails then go through a daily plan which is 1. evaluating ancillary test specimens using a microscope 2. discussing the findings with a specialist 3. recording findings for a final histological report. This usually takes 30 minutes to two hours depending on complexity and the number of specimens evaluated.

Pros: Scarce skill
Cons: not family friendly

NHLS taught me a lot of things

We work as a team. We sacrifice a lot because we are short staffed. It is a good place for learning but not for growing . We do a lot of overtime, working long hours because of the shortage of staff.

Pros: Great place to learn
Cons: A lot of overtime due to shortage of staff

About Puleng Sithole, the good and the bad

I am a strong and honest individual with capability to adapt to professional work environments. I have realistic expectations of life. I also work well in a team, a fast leaner, hard worker, always ready for a challenge and working towards achieving a goal. The relationship with my co-workers is very strong, we all work towards one goal, which is to serve the company. So far I have learned communication, report writing - Standard operating procedures, patience, at all levels, we work closely with Doctors and they have their own way of doing things, so at the end of the day, we must agree to one goal still. I enjoy everything about my work including having one on one meeting with our clients through discussing. The most challenging aspects is the internal system that we are using, we are working with other departments, example, debtors, creditors, supply chain, programme management department, in most cases expenses are not captured on time and that is really challenging.

Pros: At the moment , there are no opportunities
Cons: Driving to work everyday is a challenge
