Excellent learning experience

Group Five has given me the ability to grow within my career. It has given me the platform to climb the corporate ladder by assisting me with my studies and promoting me within the company. I have worked with different people over the years and with their help and knowledge I was able to improve my work skills. It is always a pleasure to work within a team where everyone’s input counts and you are always made part of the team.

Pros: Being able to study within the company

Exposed to Nuclear Project Work ahead of the NNBP

Nuclear is a rewarding but challenging working environment Problem are complex Projects are almost always under financial pressure Nuclear Safety Culture prevails over all competing priorities I enjoy the Engineering Construction Working Environment and the challenges that come along with working on complex projects in RSA I struggle most with the lack of expertise available in the RSA and short sighted view that some corporates have.

Pros: Cape Town based employement
Cons: low salary

Excellent stepping stone

I have to say, working in construction has taught me to utilise my imagination more, while staying within the health & safety borders & boundaries. As for the company, it's a place where I've met different people from walks of life.

Pros: Perfect learning curve for someone coming from a different back ground.
Cons: On site structure needs improvement

Improvement in knowledge of building

Working on a daily basis involve giving clarity to all labour and skilled people on site. Communicating with sub-contactors on how to solve problems we encounter. we always finding ways on how to undertake a particular trade on time and with good quality. Safety is something that we take very seriously. We do daily checks on the areas we going to work on and discuss problems we encountered on the previous day and also how we can avoid them in future. Communication with co-workers is important to know whatever is happening on site. Its always challenging to have people not pitching on time while we discuss duties for today. But most of all, building is what I love doing.

Pros: Great to understand work and going for the highest position.
Cons: Always working over weekends.

Excellent training

When I started at Group Five, I was quite "green" however my chief estimator saw this as an opportunity to train me from scratch to work with tenders as he saw that I was passionate about construction and I was eager to learn. I am now able to complete 90% of the tender process (excluding the building up of rates). My bosses are confident to allow me to proceed on my own and to make my own informed decisions i.e. dealing clients / consultants / subcontractors. I love the fact that we work to deadlines as it is a kind of rush for me. Unfortunately, there was nepotism within my department which the directors in charge turned a blind eye towards and promises which were made and documented were not followed through on.

Pros: Great collegues in other departments which I worked with
Cons: Under-valued and thanklessness even when I went beyond call of duty
