The Department of Environmental Affairs

The current work environment at the department of environmental affairs is a multi disiplinary environment as such exposing one to different work challenges and archievements. The chief directorate chemical and waste management on its own couldnt be what it is without the directorates that make it including Land remediation and Licencing of waste management activities. Issueing Land Remediation Orders and Licences involves analysing site assesment reports accurately in order to come to the best environmentally friendly decision, attention to detail and the guiding of the national norms and standards is crucial.

Pros: Travelling
Cons: Backlog and late processing of applications

Eye opening site inspection at ESKOM Medupi Power Station in Lephalale

When I was an in 2013 I learnt a lot from the the ESKOM Environmental Management and SHERQ Management Team at the Medupi Power Station in Lephalale, they never take any thing for granted, from the way you your vehicle, the PPE you wearing. You always reminded that you must secure your safety first and that avoiding littering is one element of ensuring your safety. The team had every SHERQ and Env. Management document in one digital file and ensured that we (the inspection could access every file we needed for our inspection). The experience showed me just how serious Safety and Environmental Management are and how the regulated community ensures compliance with the authorizations and permits issued by the department even if they are State Owned Companies.

Pros: Culture to empower employees through technical work exposure and formal training
Cons: Old fashioned management style of managing people instead of managing performance

An opportunity to expand my knowledge and learn more

My work entails ensuring that project management carried by the department are accurate and management of contract administration. I maintain the relationship with co-workers based in province by providing support in contract/project related issues at head office. Through the years I have learned the importance of team work and better understanding of managing office and project management. The most rewarding or exciting part of of my job is the fact that I contribute in creating work opportunities for south African and contributing to the growth of our country. The most challenging part is actually is making deadlines and working late to achieve that which in return becomes the most rewarding part of my work.

Pros: Great opportunity and huge responsibility
Cons: Long working hours

Excellent learning curve

Basically on a day to day basis i vet contracts and other legal documents, i also draft legal opinions on a variety of topics and i also offer general legal support to the Department. I have a great working relationship with my colleagues, starting from the cleaning staff and going all the way up to our Chief Director. I have learnt a lot during my time here, I've learnt how to to vet contracts and my writing has improved tremendously. I have a positive outlook on life so i generally enjoy all the tasks assigned to me. I would say the most challenging aspect of my job is meeting deadlines because upon completion of my tasks my work has to be reviewed by my supervisor who in turn has to pass it on to the Director for approval, this is a challenge because these two individuals also have their own work to do so it becomes time consuming when they have to check my work and we are also short staffed for the volume of work we have.

Pros: there is a great opportunity for promotion but i am really interested in getting into the legal fraternity
Cons: we are short staffed for the volume of work that has to be done.
