Cape Peninsula University of Technology Reviews

Working journey of Yolanda Ketse

Working at the academic industry I have learnt to do research and academic writing and reporting. I have grown in service quality and customer orientation. I deal with students and academics. I organize meetings, functions and conferences for the department. I enjoy dealing with people and can excel individually.

Pros: The company provide development opportunities such as studying, good employee benefits, flexible working hours, friendly and supportive colleagues and good working environment. The employer policies
Cons: I think development in the systems and processes is required.

Work hard always

My name is Nomasomi Mankayi and I was working at CPUT as Admin Assistant for 18 months on the RPL unit dealing with appicatio forms and students. Answering queries through the phone and through emails and also processing contracts NAD making sure that part time lecture are getting paid at the end of the month. Doing requisitions for the unit catering and stationery. I have learnt to handle queries of the students and partime lecturers. I have learnt to calculate the budget of every Curriculum Officer so that they must not exceed the allocated budget. I enjoyed working with people, different characters some are good some are bad but I could keep the smile and make everyone happy. The most challenging part was when the sustitude lecture did on t get paid for the month so I had to go back to the salaries office and ask why is the person did not get paid and try to get the person a check or EFT payment

Pros: Good
Cons: Normal hours

Great company to work for

I work in an academic institution.it's very big with five campuses. I work in Finance department , in Student Debtors section. We deal directly with students. Our department deals with student refunds, payments made by students, student debt collection, staff waivers , amendments made by students in their subjects, and any other adjustments on their accounts. I work in collection side. We follow up on any outstanding debts. And we hand over all old debt to external debt collectors. And for those who want to make payment arrangements can do that with us. It's quite a challenging job as we feel with all sorts of characters, and some can be very rude. But at the same time it make me grow as a person and it teaches me to be patient and learn how to be firm as well.

Pros: Our department doesn't have any room for growth. But the company itself has so many opprtunities
Cons: We don't have any long working hours expect when it's registration time.

Opportunity to gain experience in exposure to technical innovations.

Following the same procedure every day can be boring at times but it does help me to understand the importance of abiding by the rules. People who appreciate your efforts are a motivation and this create an effective communication talent amongst us. Teamwork and planning will always bring about solutions to any problem. I really enjoying trying something new. The most challenging thing is to be around people who speak the language you're not familiar with.

Pros: I am prepared to do anything that will benefit the company and boost my confidence in the industry.
Cons: I am looking forward to do whatever it takes to make sure that all given tasks are up to standard. Working shifts and overtime wouldn't be an issue.

EXPERIENCES

A TYPICAL WOULD BE YOU COMING IN ON TIME AND DO EVERYTHINGS THAT IS IN YOUR WORK LOG BOOK FOR THE DAY AND IF YOU FINISH WITH THAT ASSISTING OTHER CO-WORKERS WITH THEIR WORK.I GAINED ALOT OF EX[ERIENCE WORKING FOR A BIG COMPANY LIKE CPUT OVER THE PAST 3 YEARS ON AND OFF.THE MOST CHALLENGING PART IS WHEN YOU HAVE DEADLINES AND A PROTEST INTERFERES WITH IT BUT IS A SOLUTION FOR THAT ASWELL TO WORK AT OTHER CAMPUSES OR REMOTELY.SO WHAT I HAVE LEARNT IS THAT YOU MUST ALWAYS HAVE A BACK UP PLAN IN ORDER TO COMPLETE YOUR TASKS.

Pros: FLEXIBILITY
Cons: NO OVERTIME FOR CONTRACT WORKERS

Career prospects

Working at an educational institution as an administrator for teaching and learning has awarded me an opportunity to multi task and not focusing on one particular job specification at a time. I also got an opportunity to take on a short course in Human Resources Management. Having to interact directly with acsdemic staff committees has been the greatest highlight of my job as I am the liaison between my office, faculty and academic staff.

Pros: Opportunities for furthering studies and gaining more ecposure in HR related duties.
Cons: Short contract

There is an excellent learning curve for me is well because you get knowledge.

The work was good. But you are not that much exposed like in a way when you are working in the industries outside the institution. The work is almost the same most of the time but it was interesting.

Pros: since the work is taking place within the institution is not easy to get promotion or job to be more precise.
Cons: the longest working hours i have worked is 9 hours before i get used to the work that i was doing.

Career's desire booster

CPUT is one of the big company which constitute of a tremendous amount of work which requires someone with multi tasking and working under pressure abilities. I'm enjoying myself working there but its tiring but atleast with help from among other workers it gets better. Its quiet an honour to be exposed into working with variety of people whom i get to learn more from and different ideas being shared. I learnt to keep up with my work and manage deal with diiferent people as well as become innovative, pay attention to details. Most challenging task is when working under supervision.

Pros: suggest alternative ideas to resolve a problem
Cons: stubborn in decision making

Challenging yet rewarding

working in an higher education institution as a professional support staff can be quiet challenging and rewarding at the same time. Challenges would be similar to any organization actually where you struggle with completing a certain report because information that needed to go into it was not forwarded on time (if at all) this then gives you an opportunity to exercise your prioritizing skill as well as an opportunity to form good relations with your colleagues so that you can be able to be "remembered" should you need certain information that will help you finish a certain task or increase your productivity. It is rewarding in the sense that, when you have done all you could and finally see things coming to shape, you cant help but give yourself a pat on the back on the job well done. Seeing students who have completed their qualification finally walking up to that stage and their parents cheering for them is quite a good feeling.

Pros: Interaction with different people on a daily basis, Always brings new challenges; promotes self development
Cons: University strikes
