University of The Western Cape Reviews

Experience of a life time

I work in an environment where we have an open office with computers where when a student enters it is easy for us to access and help a student, our shifts are usually in between our classes so we can be able to manage our time as well. we are a team where we also help each other as tutors when we are unable to help a student or perhaps forgot a function. I enjoyed mostly our training where we were told to figure things out on our own first and we were more hands on which makes it easy to learn and the most thrill I used to get is when I tutor a computer illiterate student and after 3 days they come back with more experience that I do.

Pros: Great opportunity for familiarizing myself with MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel
Cons: Teaching slow learnerd students because it takes patients to teach them

A day in a PhD candidate life

Working at my company is tiring, you have a lot of work to do in a day. The work day starts at 8am and ends at 6pm. However, after work I get to make food for myself then work on reviews. Read more on my field of expertise and get updated. My relationship with my co-workers is good though we don't speak much since everyone is focused on their work. I have learnt some presentation skills and being independent. I enjoy working in the lab and getting good results. The most challenging aspect of the job is doing reviews on my project since it requires a lot of reading.

Pros: no tax payed
Cons: long working hours

Hardworking and initiative problem solver

Since i am a student, i also tutor first years at the university. I tutor them the so-called 'hard subjct'-mahematics. I work under pressure with my team and the student perform very well. I'm very well organised as I also managed to study and totur the first years which means multi task is m thing. I have learnt best from my lectures, they give us advice on how to succeed in life and make good career choices. they are very skilled and hav taught me a lot. I like to make jokes while i'm tutoring so that the students cannot find the sessions boring i want them to be more enthusiastic and not be afraid or anything. Most challenging aspect is that time management is what i should be good at, thats why I plan for the day and write all to do list on my journal so that i cannot forget. Because after classes i also go to the gym to reduce fatigue and be healthier. I really like gym as it improves mental ability and i become physically more healthier.

Pros: Gain more skills
Cons: Too much workload

My Current Situation at Work

I work as a tutor at a huge university. Given the current academic climate and unstable conditions with #FeesMustFall Campaign and Protests, I have a dire need to seek other employment. The reality is that I am a contract staff member and the possibility of a permanent position is very slim. I have no other option but to try and find other employment to meet my needs of financial instability and emotional exhaustion.

Pros: Interaction with Staff is great
Cons: Contract Staff stay long on Contract

A place where ones potential can be maximised

an interactive environment that is multicultural and good work ethics. a typical work day nay start in the morning and probably end late at night depending on tasks at hand. co-workers are easy to get along with. I have learnt to work both independently and as a team to achieve set objectives.

Pros: great place to grow academically
Cons: long protocols

I’m an all rounder at Executive level

The secret to success is my ability to get the job done by understanding the context of the landscape of the sector and navigate through this time of uncertainty. I come with a history of successful stories and have a myriad of examples of success most notably turning a bankrupt university to function at a level of sophistication and profitability.

Pros: I will bring new opportunities and change management functionality.
Cons: None

As a part- time lecturer at the University of the Western cape, the work day becomes very busy every week and work is always under pressure. The relationship with my colleague at the department of Anthropology/sociology is good but some time it becomes very difficult to maintain for a long time. Tolerance is one of the things I have learnt from my work especially when dealing with the students and what I enjoy mostly is teaching, listening to students including the social advice to the students in my discipline. We are working in the environment where the classes are overcrowded and the most challenging aspects especially in my discipline (sociology) is marking the student's assignments and examination scripts and capturing the marks.

Pros: Available opportunities for promotion but requires very hard work
Cons: Due to the constrain of the work, it will condition you to work after hours but with out pay

Great opportunity

Dear Sir/Madam I am a dedicated and hardworking individual, unafraid to work tirelessly in order to achieve my goals. My career discipline focused chiefly on key concepts in astrophysics and linking physics to astronomy working on variety of data sets. I credit my success in this field to hard work, dedication and overall enthusiasm for my work as manifested by my transcripts. I'm an independent worker and commendably capable of problem solving and trouble-shooting on my own, as well as becoming familiar with the relevant literature. It will be a great pleasure for me to exercise my skills as a data scientist. I will very much appreciate if you consider me for this job. Hope to hear a favorable response from you and speaking with you about this employment opportunity.

Pros: Striving for attaining more skills
Cons: Doing nothing at workplace

Excellent learning curve and lab work experience

It is great to be apart of Uwc helping first year students understanding practicals. A typical day is 5 hours of work including helping students for 2 annd a half hours and the other 2 amd a half hours are spemt on marking books/tests.many times before the practical sessions start, the lab has to be prepared for the students. I love working with my co-workers, they are such wonderful people I enjoy interacting with the students, as i was also once in their place. Most challenging aspect of the job, well there was none as i love what i do

Pros: Graet opportunity for lab work experience
Cons: None
