University of Pretoria Reviews

Good

I'm only a student but from what I can see, it's a good place to work, lecturers are paid well and the benefits are good, medical aid and leave is present, people aren't just fired for no reason, it's really nice

Pros: Good
Cons: Bad

Opportunity for growth

The university taught me a lot about corporate environment. There is a great corporate culture I fitted with so well. I learnt a lot of financial work I had no idea of since it was not my major. I have been given a chance to experience other departments and I think it will be an advantage in furthering my career going forward.

Pros: Great first corporate experience
Cons: Far from home

Excellent working environment

Working for the university is very fulfilling and rewarding. I enjoy being a teaching assistant and working with other academics. I also enjoy teaching and learning. A typical workday would be in a lecture room teaching or supervising a group of about 100 students or working in a laboratory conducting experiments and/ or supervising a group of about 5 students a time.

Pros: Great working environment and many opportunities for learning and improving yourself
Cons: Not a very high salary

Exceptional managers

Even though we are busy very daily, we still get odd occasions where we mingle. Co-workers are always making jokes with one another. I have learned many new skills in day to day operational procedures. Concentration and delivering on time

Pros: Opportunity to learn and grow
Cons: Working overtime unexpectedly

Working at Mimmos

I worked as a waiter at Mimmos, in Watermeyer. I enjoyed the short time I worked there in 2018 (from the beginning of January, to the end of February), but it was challenging. Around February, the restaurant would get very busy, putting strain on myself and the other waiters. In a short period of time I learned to cope with very stressful situations. I befriended a few colleagues, for which I was greatful, because they allowed for learning opportunities. It's safe to say that I learned most of the skills I needed to be efficient from them. The most challenging part of the job was dealing with mistakes - be it a mishap in the kitchen or my own fault. Professionalism is key during times like these - a skill I learned through personal experience.

Pros: Great for learning how to work under pressure
Cons: Long hours, late nights, difficult situations with some co-workers

Working the university of Pretoria was fun. I learned how to interact with people. The work environment was excellent, the department I worked in was not supporting us to be best we can be.

Great for learning

I enjoyed working for the university. It was great for reinforcing my knowledge on the subject matter and great for interacting with students . The issue is that there is no room for promotion to more senior roles or pay scales

Pros: Great for experience
Cons: Non permanent work

Good experience

Currently, I assist with reporting documents and drafting letters; planning, scheduling and preparation of the conferences & meetings; updating mailing lists and maintaining the members, publication and media databases. I also provide the general office administration and support. I enjoy events management and good relationships with all my colleagues. The most challenging part of my job is keeping on a diet because there are always treats being brought into the office.

Pros: Courses offered
Cons: No opportunities for promotion
