Great Leadership

The work culture was dynamic, each individual was allowed to take initiative and pursue fulfilling project. A typical working day included flexible hours, as from 2022 till 2023 we were allowed to work hybrid. The co-workers were supportive and one could lean on them for advice and assistance with tasks. I have learnt that great leadership allows others to thrive. We had a brilliant leader, who inspired us and motivated us to do well in our job. I thoroughly enjoyed the learning aspect of the job. Challenges faced included having to travel far to meet some clients for future work.

Pros: Great opportunity for growth
Cons: Long commute to work

A Place to be!!!

Working for an academic institution is interesting. I guess it depends for which department you work. An academic institution is subdivided into non-academic staff and academic staff members. I desire is to be part of the academic staff to be honest. We can get to this a bit later though. A typical work day where I am employed would start at 07h30am till 16h00pm. The is flextime which is dependent of your circumstances, in terms of, you can work different hours in the morning and finish at a different time. In very unique circumstances you can work the odd day form home as well. Wow! This sound great thus far, does it not? What I like about the institution I work for is that it very professional.

Pros: Great opportunity to grow academically
Cons: Routine in terms of work ethics

Typical day-to-day job

Some days are more stressful than others, but a typical day will start at 7h30 am and end at 4h30 pm working non-stop. I have a good work relationship with my co-workers and we get along very well. The job however is not mentally challenging for me. Really there is nothing exciting about it.

Pros: pension benefit
Cons: almost no opportunity for growth

Working Environment

Since I do not originate from the western cape province I have realised it is really difficult to get along with people from here, especially if you don't know Afrikaans like me. Some of my co-workers don't know English that much so we have a bit of misunderstanding. I enjoy the fact that everyone minds their own business. I love the fact the University of working in is a bit advanced and I get to learn a lot of stuff and being independent. It has really helped me to get confident in my work.

Pros: Great opportunity for learning
Cons: Long working hours

Typical day as a junior chemical analyst

A days work would include sample preparation, which include extractions, on food, plant material, alcoholic beverages, soil, water and essial oils. Followed by sample analysis on GC-MS machines, in the meantime the data prcessing is performed on previously analyzed samples and reports are send to clients.

Pros: Great learning environment
Cons: Long working hours without conpensation

Tutoring Financial Accounting to first year students at Stellenbosch university

My name is Thembeka Ngwenya, born and raised in Mpumalanga province, South Africa. I am a current 3rd year student at Stellenbosch University, pursuing a triple major in Transport Economics, Quantitative Management and Logistics Management. My main focus is Transport Economics, but I understand the gap that is filled by the need of quantitative and logistics management services to complete the whole supply chain flow; which is why I aim interested in all focal areas. I am looking for more practical work experience, preferably within the transport economics/ quantitative/ logistics or administration sectors, in order to close the gap between my academics and work practicality. I aim to use this opportunity as a way of empowering my strengths, challenging my weaknesses and limits and cultivating and expanding my skills and competencies. I am a hardworking and efficient professional and always willing to go the extra mile.

Pros: Teaching opportunities, public speaking, administration skills
Cons: Post office hours assistance require, limited tutor hour

Great practical modules offered as part of the course work

As I am still studying, the information supplied is with regards to the University. At a masters level, we share an office with 4 to 6 other masters students. We often help each other with tasks and get advice on particular tasks that are specific to individual theses.

Pros: Learn in-depth behaviours of structural components
Cons: Do not get much practical exposure
