Student life

I am a student. I am quite busy this semester, so I wake up early daily to start working. I also part of a lot of activities on campus. However, I have been under personal growth and development to be a better person.

Pros: Greater diversity
Cons: Workload is high

Student Environment, Excellent for Training

08:30 - 16:30 with weekends as required by research demand. Student Environment. Teaching Atmosphere. Good for Training. Very friendly environment. Good relationships with ALL co-workers/colleagues/students/managers. Acquired most of my technical skills. Learned a lot of patience with the research process. Most enjoyable was doing independent research and having colleagues to confide in daily. Only deficit was lack of Results-driven attitude from academic environment - clashing with my personality. Most challenging was waiting on responses from supervisors + remaining busy without pressure.

Pros: Doing independent research and having great colleagues to confide in daily.
Cons: Lack of results-driven attitude from academic environment

Great learning experience

It Is an hounour for me to work for one of the best Urologist South africa has got,he was the first Doctor in South africa to perform a penile transplant successfully. Today he is known world wide for his work. I am the secretarty to this amazing person and his team of Doctors. My duties include, answering the telephone, booking private patients, petty cash, invoices, requisitions, ordering stationery, assisting students, assist with student marks, administrative tasks for the urology clinic at Tygerberg Hospital. The challenging aspect of my job is to be as accurate as you possibly can there is very little room for error, but I love what I do to see the amazing work these doctors do everyday and how they help people is really a blessing.

Pros: I have learned such alot since working here this has been a stepping stone for me.
Cons: using your own initiative 90% of the time.

My experience in higher education

I've been working at the University for almost eight years. There are opportunities for further studies for both yourself, kids and spouse. However, opportunities for growth are slim. In the eight years I've been working here I did 3 qualifications with the hope of being promoted to at least mid-management level. With my experience and qualifications I thought I would be in mid-management position. I work with a lot of stakeholders, both inside and outside of the organisation. I've learned that communication is very important because I work with a diverse crowd and different level of stakeholders from students to doctors and professors. I enjoy working with people and teamwork in my current environment is very important. The most challenging aspects in my job is, we are a support service and things seldom works out as planned. Therefore it is difficult to plan ahead because of urgent things popping up without prior notice.

Pros: Great travel opportunities
Cons: Limited growth

Committed and hardworking with excellence in mind.

I project manage and coordinate reserach activities, involved in academic activities, pplan and manage interactions with stakeholders etc. Excellent team player and effective leardirship qualities. I enjoy producing excellent results and contributing to knowledge. Challenged by tight timelines and contextual challenges but love resolving and overcoming them through coordinated ad evidence based actions. I have learnt the importance of growth and paying attention to people not just goals, which I value and enjoy.

Pros: Academic growth opportunities and exposure
Cons: Growth in role was limited

A Place to be!!!

Working for an academic institution is interesting. I guess it depends for which department you work. An academic institution is subdivided into non-academic staff and academic staff members. I desire is to be part of the academic staff to be honest. We can get to this a bit later though. A typical work day where I am employed would start at 07h30am till 16h00pm. The is flextime which is dependent of your circumstances, in terms of, you can work different hours in the morning and finish at a different time. In very unique circumstances you can work the odd day form home as well. Wow! This sound great thus far, does it not? What I like about the institution I work for is that it very professional.

Pros: Great opportunity to grow academically
Cons: Routine in terms of work ethics

Typical day-to-day job

Some days are more stressful than others, but a typical day will start at 7h30 am and end at 4h30 pm working non-stop. I have a good work relationship with my co-workers and we get along very well. The job however is not mentally challenging for me. Really there is nothing exciting about it.

Pros: pension benefit
Cons: almost no opportunity for growth
