JSE experience by virtue of the diversity of the companies we invest in.

I work at an Asset Management Company which manages R2 trillion worth of assets. I liaise with the office of the Ministrations since the Minister of Finance is our Shareholder. I am responsible for Statutory Committees, CIPC Lodgment and a Instilling governance mechanisms at our Investee Companies. By virtue of being an Admitted Attorney of the High Court it means my work is not only limited to administration but is also very technical and entails also Commissioning company documents as I am a Commissioner of Oaths. My experience is very wide and easily transferable. The challenging thing in our department is when Documents are not submitted in time for the meeting, I work well in a team and also imparting knowledge since I had 2 graduates reporting to me.

Cons: Our departmental structure is very flat and not pyramid structure.

Working in asset management

Exposure to a wide range of asset classes including private equity and listed equities just to mention a few. Receiving leadership and guidance from industry expects with vast years of experience and knowledge. A typical work day includes capturing client instructions and investee companies transaction on the bank as well as the accounting system used. It has become an interesting journey seeing the impact that the investee companies has on the economy as well the general public as a whole through its job creation and social responsibilities participation. The job can be demanding at times such as month end and year end with long hours required from all employees with the different finance functions. It has however provided a skill of performing duties.

I have learnt a lot about team work

Iyho most challenging aspect of the job is during year end when we need to reflect on our year transactions and correct any errors arhat occurred and also finalise financial statements for small entities, but with team work it all works out well. Diversity is also managed well within the team it what what keeps us together.

Pros: There are great opportunities to move within different divisions .
Cons: The cons would be sometimes having a lot of work to do and closer submissions but time management helps in such instances.

The work a great learning experience in that its was aligned with what i studied.

rigid environment, very professional relationship with co-workers. the environment is very competitive. I enjoyed doing my job, Most challenging is an autocratic management style.

Working in asset management

A typical day consist of preparing investments payments, ensuring that the necessary requirements have been met and processing those payments on the system once payments have been done. This requires great time management and attention to detail. Month end closures requires the pricing of instruments(investments), market value checks, reporting to the client as well and business(internally) and the analysis of portfolios to calculate managements fees. Year end derivable include the preparation of financial statements and preparing and liaising with auditors.

I am meticulous, a quick-learner, hardworking and an individual who thrives under pressure and consequently meet deadlines timeously. I have excellent interpersonal skills, problem solving skills, innovative skills, time management skills and creative thinking ability, good report writing skills (minute taking), able to work independently and also part of the team, with excellent computer literacy skills (Full MS Office 2007).
