North-West University Reviews

Excellent

Working as a student assistant is a learning curve for many students. One gains so much knowledge about working in academia. As a student assistant, you help students during practical lessons, you are responsible for marking assignments and the practical exams. The one thing that I enjoyed was interacting with a lot of people, this teaches you social and communication skills. This job required for me to take the lead when possible, especially when the lecturer is unavailable.

Pros: Great learning opportunity
Cons: Under paid

Expirience

Working conditions are just fine. The environment is conducive for personal development. Relationship between me and my colleges is well. But the difference between employees salaries working the same job, having the same qualifications is the main reason I want to leave the institution.

Pros: opportunity for growth in all levels and areas of life
Cons: Unfairness

One of the institution without fear of students protests

It is nice to be part of NWU, the environment and people within the institution are very welcoming, People in here treat everyone they way they would like to be treated and one needs to learn quickly as there is too much to consume within a short space of time

Pros: easy to develop because of transformation
Cons: fast paced environment

Great learning experienced

A typical work day involves coming up with ideas to solve field and laboratory challenges. My relationship with colleagues is normal. I have learned how to co-operate with others, how to communicate with colleagues and how to think outsude the box. I enjoy tackling new challenges, working on laboratory experiments and doing field work.

Pros: Ample opportunities for growth
Cons: Can be exhausting at times

Diverse, hard-working, practical

As a doctoral researcher at the NWU I was responsible for collecting, analysing and presenting meteorolgy & air quality data. I formed part of several interdisciplinary teams from around the world where I learnt valuable lessons about effective communication, problem solving & division of workload. I am ambitious, self-motivated, detail-oriented, hardworking & enjoy problem solving. I speak several languages (Eng., Afr., German, and basic French & Tswana). The most challenging aspect of my work as a doctoral researcher was learning to code (in R) - the learning curve was steep but my persistence was ultimately rewarding.

Pros: Experience with international, interdisciplinary teams
Cons: Long periods away from home, difficulty finding a work/home balance since I had to work from home and did not have an office space
