Excellent learning ability

I enjoy working as a fund accountant as it challenges me and expose me to different aspects almost everyday. It taught me the importance of working with other people and improved my strongest points like, attention to detail, working under pressure and working hard to achieve the best possible results. But challenges come when you have to meet deadline and you have statements that you requested but did not get anything back, you follow up with no luck.

Pros: exposure to financial industry
Cons: long working hours and lack of proper training

Personal and team empowerment

I check my email before everything every morning to see if is the important things from a client or my manager. Firstly I download statements from the portal of the client. And paste them in our system. If the are new instructions trading I upload the in Investone. Invest one should equal the broker if not I have to investigate what went wrong. I upload interest on a daily basis as well. I process everything and then pool NAV breakdown summary that I will send to the client, I do that on a daily basis as well. Everybody I'm working with is friendly and we work as a team. Because if I done with my work for a day I assist other so that we can leave early. I have learnt many things. Firstly how to price instruments such as SWAPs and FRAs, distribution of income, TERs. I have also learnt that at work we have to finish work on time, because by doing that everything will work smoothly.

Pros: Working with specialist on the field.
Cons: The company is currently retrenching.

My Experience

I have learnt a lot here at Maitland, my day consists of communicating with clients, sorting out their incidents in a timely manner, I like to collaborate with colleagues as I believe I learn more when I collaborate. I have a good relationship with my colleagues as I'm a warm talkative person who is always eager to assist and explore in other work avenues whenever the opportunity arises, I always assist where I can and that has made it easier for colleagues to trust me when it comes to work as I always avail myself. I mostly enjoy making sure that all issues that clients have are resolved and are happy and able to work or continue with their as per normal. The challenges I have faced is lack of knowledge sharing. I also experienced a challenge where I wanted to shadow another employee but I was not allowed, which I felt that closed the gap for me to learn more.

My current company ( Maitland Group ) is one of big international company. I am working with the HR Operations team which is responsible for providing a comprehensive and seamless transactional HR service to the Cape Town, Johannesburg and Mauritius offices. We have more than 800 employees in Cape Town branch. The environment is very friendly, i enjoy each and every day i spend here. I enjoy to practise the company values everyday. I have learned the importance of Perfomance Goals, KPIs and Values. I am very freindly, I have a good relationship with colleagues.

Cons: We hour from 08:00 pm - 17:00 pm

Great experience in the company

Abstracting of intercompany bills. :Abstracting of AR/AP in entities. :Performing recons in the entities and checking the accuracy of the trial balances. :Communication Skills Effective business communication using different mediums (internally and externally) :Observing deadlines (Time Management) :Preparing net settlements.

Good experience

. Through my one year experience I have confidence to say that I am comfortable working under pressure, The ManCos I was working for had cut off times and fact that I had to process all the instructions for team member to send the reports before cutoff time and I have to make sure I produce quality work performance all the time and I have gained knowledge and understanding in fund administration. I strongly believe I have strong work ethic I do what is expected of me and always eager to learn new work. I have learned the importance of paying attention to details, communication skills and taking ownership/accountability for the work allocated to me. I am very passionate of being in the investment industry

A typical work day

I do my to-do list first for all my clients that I am working on for the day, check my emails for any other tasks that I should add, put the activities in my outlook calendar. If there is a capital call to do, I need to attend to that first thing before all the other tasks. Download bank statements, do daily processing on investran accounting.If that day I need to run the management reports and Investor reports, I do that. Attend client meetings and internal meetings via Teams. Respond to internal queries, client queries, audit queries and attend to bank requests on my funds. Assisting my colleagues if they need assistance.

Pros: need to have an accounting degree, have can do attitude, able to produce high quality work at all times internally and for clients. Produce monthly reports and quarterly reports and financial statements timeously
Cons: able to work long hours in order to meet deadlines
