Working in mining industry

I worked in this company for four years, it is a very diverse company, Safety is the first thing to think of before we start our day,we must do a safety pledge every morning in our daily caucus meetings Once in a month we sit in a meeting with our HOD to discuss events happened and what to do in the near future. Culture- we have welness programs, the company cares its employees. Having to deal with operators making your job more difficult

Pros: Getting incentives when production targets are met
Cons: Maintaining safety standards while keeping up with production targets.

Great project management exposure

I am accountable for the following activities: a. Compiling charter documents and scope definition; b. Reviewing study reports, engineering designs and drawings; c. Presenting technical proposals for capital approval to senior management; d. Participating in tender evaluation and adjudication of contractors; e. Ensuring contractor compliance to KIOC standards and specifications; f. Executing multi-discipline improvement projects as summarized below: • Waste Spreader Positioning System Upgrade; • JIG Modular Plant Upgrade; • Decommissioning of In-pit Crusher and associated conveyor structures; • Design and Installation of FeSi Make-up System; • Upgrading DMS Taster Plant; • Redesign of Specific Chutes; • Slime Lines Upgrade at DMS Plant.

Taught me the open cast mining as a millwright, worked a lot with big machinery.

as a learner millwright I used to go to different sections on the mine, therefore learning from different artisans. I worked at trucks where I worked with Komatsu 920s and 730s, worked with both electrician and fitter, which taught me a lot. I then went to drills where I worked with a master millwright he taught me a lot about being a millwright, I later worked at the plant with millwrights which was a great exposure for me. all these sections were willing to help me become a great millwright and I cant wait to learn more and more in different companies and different environments.

Pros: exposure was worth it.
Cons: long working hours and shifts

Excellent big company to work for

Review all safety procedures,working in a group of 20 people is better because of close relationships, becoming like a family. Working from 7 - 4 and you can go home and relax with your family. The work is hard ,physical and can become monotonous.The company organising fun days to relax and do team building.

I am currently appointed as an HR Advisor at a Mine in the Northern Cape.

A typical day at the workplace includes engaging with employees, management and stakeholders such as Trade Unions on a daily basis in order to provide assistance and resolve challenges. With excellent interpersonal skills and a high level of emotional intelligence building positive relations forms an important part of what I do. I have very good relationships with co-workers, employees, management and stakeholders. I've been with this Company for 18 years and have grown and developed a loth through what I have learned here. It is an excellent Company to work for however it is important I feel to explore other opportunities in order to improve and to continue to develop.

Implement medical surveillance and diagnose occupational disease. Ensure Compliance to the Mine Health and Safety Act 29 of 1996 Assist the employer with occupational health, medico-legal and applicable corporate governance requirements (absenteeism). Ensure health and wellness promotion for employees. Awarded GM Award for Best Occupational Health Department.

Exciting and extraordinary journey

People-oriented individual who starts the day with a glance at previous day performance. On my arrival at work I create an awesome day by greeting colleagues and friends, finding out about their wellbeing and that of their families. I then thank and recognize everyone for previous day performance. I have learned that giving people individualized attention motivates and encourages team members to give discretionary effort in their work. I enjoy the renewed focus brought by the drive for benchmark performance. The most challenging aspect of the job is to influence everyone to rally behind a common goal

Great learning curve and focus on the ball

Kumba is a great company to work for. The learning experience and robust effect of getting work done actually fullfils a person. Training and development is what i have experience most on in the OD field. i have recently acquired the Human Resourcing experience. This field is so broad, the learning here is huge especially for a big company like Kumba. The challenge is the capacity compared to the clients we serve.

Pros: Great learning curve
Cons: Working under pressure and lack of capacity to serve
