Excellent learning curve, Opportunity for steady growth

Usually start work earlier than the prescribed time and leave later than the rest of my colleagues this is a great way to see who's at work (then I would call colleagues to check on them of course) My first duty of the day is checking morning reports(for my department and the substations )which is basically a report of all the faults that occurred on the power system then I respond according to the morning report. Thereafter I check another system report that's more accurate than the first one(inhouse systems). After making these analysis I usually make a cup of tea if I have the time to do so then check up on our suppliers e.g any orders we might be waiting for or outstanding payments etc. Check if our filling system is in order, check if its order, I love doing fault finding, maintence planning, travelling. The most challenging aspects are when we can't get an outage for planned and unplanned plant maintenance and definitely the customer complaints.

Pros: Endless opportunities
Cons: Call outs, driving for long periods

Good company to work with

Very good company to work for. No unnecessary stress from management. Salary not too bad. Work gets too much at times. Standby gets to be a pain sometimes but it's our job to keep the lights on. I wouldn't even by mistake go back to private companies. Operators run those firms on emotions and no consideration for employees lives. Work is challenging. Colleagues help one another except for a few people.

Pros: Long time to get promoted
Cons: Standby a pain. Waking up at night..

Brilliant experience

My knowledge is not only limited to Eskom but I even seek to know how various companies conduct procurement and sourcing. I have proven myself to be very flexible in my work whilst remaining within the permitted parameters of my work. I was asked to service the East London Power Station and Majuba Underground Coal Gasification over and above my daily work tasks. The East London project did not have an existing cross-functional team which meant that it was up to me to pull resources from different sites in order to ensure delivery of the project.

Pros: Exposure of dealing with international companies
Cons: Red tapes

Eskom has been an amazing place to work gain exposure across numerous disciplines.

Eskom is a multi-disciplinary organisation which has allowed me to gain exposure working in environments which i would otherwise have not had the opportunity to. The organisation has structures and an employee workforce that accommodates and encourages learning. I work with well-respected industry 'giants' and fresh graduates and continue to learn and grow through these encounters. Despite the tough times Eskom is going through, the Eskom environment continues to demonstrate resilience and focus in healing itself and i witness this daily as i carry out my daily duties as a Compliance Advisor. I've really enjoyed working with different professionals across all backgrounds and demographics and making meaningful contributions and adding value to the projects i have been involved in. In light of the current challenges, what is most challenging at the moment is keeping myself motivated and focused on the task at hand, to continue making a positive contribution to the restoration of the organisation.

Pros: Great learning ground. Great employer.
Cons: Poor consequence management culture within the organisation, which compromises the risk and compliance management environment.
