Correctional Unit Manager

It is good for working correctional service because it makes you to be alert at all times because you are amongst the criminal the whole day. Yes sometimes is very hectic at work you have to start early and knock off late more especially when you are on management level. The relationship with the co-worker is excellent we working together as a team. Since I have started 15 years ago at correctional services I have learned lot of things and different cultures in the prison and I have learned more about prisoners. What I enjoy the most is going to work daily because I know that I am going to change lot of lives and make those prisoners better people when they got out of the prison, I am more involved in activities which the prisoners are doing in the prison that is what I enjoy the most. The most challenging aspects of my job is when the prisoners fight and injured each other and you are called to come and address them and listen to their complaint.

Pros: I have big opportunity for promotion at work
Cons: I am working long hours at work sometimes

I left that job in March 2016

My job interest are financial administration. I woule like to become an Accountant. I would like to sell houses or cars or work in a bank I left my job at the prison because I wanted to do something else. My dream was never to become a Correctional Officer. I just tried it out in order to do a good job and earn a good salary and to be able to study to get a higher rank No coloureds or whites R indians were allowed to be promoted in the last 17years

Pros: Working with inmates in a prison encironment was a good but stressful experience. I worked their to face my demons working with rapists & gangsters bcos I wanted to stop being afraid of them. I overcame my fear for darkness and I am no longer afraid of criminals.
Cons: You have to be strict all the time and not be afraid of inmates. You have to be able to show them that they dont scare you bcos if they can see fear in ur eyes they will take advantage of you or the situation

Excellent learning curve

History of Transformation of the Corrcetional System in South Africa 2.1 Introduction This chapter aims to provide a brief overview of the history of the Department and the change in the direction of the correctional system during the past century. 2.2 The early 1900's shortly after Unionisation in 1910, saw the prison system also becoming responsible for the management of reformatories. Courts started playing an increasing role in the development of prison law, inter alia, with findings that it was unlawful to detain awaiting-trial offenders in solitary confinement and the ruling that offenders who felt they had been unfairly treated in prison had the legal right to approach courts of law for recourse.

Pros: great opportunity for promotion
Cons: long working hours

To work in different companies is to know more about different cultures of the working environment.

I have enjoyed working in my previous company of more than ten years, the welcoming environment, easy for me to deal with both my clients and colleagues. The company further gave me the opportunity to work with different cultures that one needs to understand various attitude, with my experience in psychiatry I adjust well. the challenging area is the people who want their ideas to be taken even if its wrong

Pros: independency
Cons: ENVIRONMENTAL STEREOTYPING

Allows one to grow in terms of human relation

I enjoy working for correctional services, i have learn a lot about life and it's challengies. I have learned that as human beings we make mistakes and deserve sencond chance. The most challenging aspect is to work with people who are broken while the main focus is more on their actions not on what triggered their actions.

Pros: Small department whic hmakes one ecxell in their job
Cons: Less opportunity for growth
