Stellenbosch University Reviews

Student Environment, Excellent for Training

08:30 - 16:30 with weekends as required by research demand. Student Environment. Teaching Atmosphere. Good for Training. Very friendly environment. Good relationships with ALL co-workers/colleagues/students/managers. Acquired most of my technical skills. Learned a lot of patience with the research process. Most enjoyable was doing independent research and having colleagues to confide in daily. Only deficit was lack of Results-driven attitude from academic environment - clashing with my personality. Most challenging was waiting on responses from supervisors + remaining busy without pressure.

Pros: Doing independent research and having great colleagues to confide in daily.
Cons: Lack of results-driven attitude from academic environment

Great Leadership

The work culture was dynamic, each individual was allowed to take initiative and pursue fulfilling project. A typical working day included flexible hours, as from 2022 till 2023 we were allowed to work hybrid. The co-workers were supportive and one could lean on them for advice and assistance with tasks. I have learnt that great leadership allows others to thrive. We had a brilliant leader, who inspired us and motivated us to do well in our job. I thoroughly enjoyed the learning aspect of the job. Challenges faced included having to travel far to meet some clients for future work.

Pros: Great opportunity for growth
Cons: Long commute to work

Typical day-to-day job

Some days are more stressful than others, but a typical day will start at 7h30 am and end at 4h30 pm working non-stop. I have a good work relationship with my co-workers and we get along very well. The job however is not mentally challenging for me. Really there is nothing exciting about it.

Pros: pension benefit
Cons: almost no opportunity for growth

My learning curve was working with the community and teach them about they health.

My day normally start with making sure stock are up to date, collecting participants folders and checking of equipment. I get along quite well with all my co-workers and we are only 15 people at our Worcester FAMCRU site. I had learned that we all need each other in our working environment and each day I learned something new, not only from my co-workers but also from the community. I enjoy teaching the participants and as a nurse I would always give them advice on health issues. The challenging aspects is TIME, getting participants to participate and making sure they stay in the study.

Pros: Teaching the community
Cons: Retaining paticipants
