Western Cape Government Reviews

Basic learning

I feel the need to be challenged more often as I do not get the opportunity to get challenged as much as I would like it. The typical work day can be busy in the morning but around 12 o'clock it can become quiet and the work flows in around 2 o'clock again. The work colleagues I have now couldn't be any nicer, they make me feel at home which I love. I'm comfortable with the people I work with. I have learnt the basics of office work in supply chain such as procedures in procurement, dealing with contracts and admin, but after a while it can become boring since there are hardly any challenges since I only deal with the exterior part of the above mentioned duties because I am a intern at the company

Pros: there are always open vacancies but so many people apply you hardly get the opportunity to get an interview
Cons: when the day gets quiet it can make you sleepy

Experience of a life time

My day starts at 08:00 in the morning and before I can spoil myself to a cup of coffee, I have queries from supplier cornering procurement of goods and services as well as progress regarding payment of invoices. After attending to these queries emails will be attended to in accordance of priority. I would have ad-hoc meetings with management as well as my team members. I have engagement with my co-colleagues from other units on a regular basis and to date have had a sound working relationship. I have learnt that there are standards and procedures one have to adhere to in order to effect services delivery, otherwise you end up having unnecessary audit queries relating to irregular expenditures. It is important to always ensure service satisfaction to ones clients (internal or external). I enjoy working with people who are positively inclined and that are willing to walk the extra mile. Managing an operation with limited resources and trying to please everyone under such conditions are very challenging.

Pros: There is always room for promotion within government sphere if you work hard
Cons: Having to work extra hours amidts resource capacity constraints

Career Building

Ive learned alot from my co-workers and seniors. I gained alot of experience and got to develope many working enviroment skills. I really enjoy working in my office because i learn something new everyday. Clients always brighten up my day whenever i consult with them telefonically or in person. My co-workers are always willing to help whenever there is a difficulty i havent dealth with before and because of that i have the ability to solve any problems in the workplace accurately on my own.Even though the difficult clients can be challanging someday, but i still try to make the best of any bad situation i find myself in.

Pros: Great oppurtunities
Cons: 8-4

Typical Work Day

Typical work day involves enabling business strategy and aligning architecture with that strategy, and getting involved at planning design and modelling levels on master data management capabilities, data and information architecture, data governance, compliance, etc.

Pros: Current work at provincial government level that essentially consists of serving 13 discrete businesses (lines of), provides a great opportunity to engage and aligning and achieving consensus across multiple disparate stakeholders, often with wildly different objectives.
Cons: Struggle with effective executive sponsorship, and LOB silos with conflicting mandates

Being the PA for the director in my directorate as i get to be exposed to many opportunities.

On a normal day at work, the first thing I do is scan through my emails and telephone and then write down my required tasked and work due for the day as a checklist. I work closely to all the staff in the directorate as I have to check and verify their work before it get to the director, therefore I have created a great relationship with each and every one of them, I am very observant person. Working as the PA has opened my doors, knowledge, and opportunity to learn more about other functions of the business from finance down to admin. I have learned how to write reports and scrutinized document and submissions. My job has taught me working under pressure and being accurate. I am on top of things because of my proactive behavior and skill in just a short space of time.

Pros: great opportunity for growth and knowledge
Cons: fixed or limited number of staff

Excellent learning experience

I work with public on a daily, meeting all these people from different backgrounds, different situations, builds to my character to get along with different people. I work alone and with people so i am flexible. I enjoy the challenges that come my way on a daily, i learnt to think in my feet fast because this office needed someome to solve problems as they come. They most challenging thing for me is coming in every morning not knowing what to expect from the doctors or patients or the public. Its something different every day.

Pros: Builds my experience in the world of work
Cons: I have to deal with people that sometimes dont understand anything

Low salary with little opportunity to negotiate

Not a great place to work. Micro management and no opportunity to negotiate a better salary. Management is not suitably qualified to lead. The culture is non-existent and good workers do not receive recognition.

Pros: Annual Bonus
Cons: Low Salary
