Standard Bank Group Reviews

Excellent Learning curve

A typical day begins with checking emails and sending out request of daily, weekly and monthly inputs from managers to collate and compile reports. Team work is the core of the business as we will not be able to get anything done as our jobs work hand in hand together. I have learned resilience as working with different personalities come with its own challenges, one needs to be able to pick up the pieces and look at the end goal which is serving customers. I have come to a point of my job that I am not challenged anymore, meaning growth have come to an end and it is time for new implementations and a new, different area or position would be ideal. I will be embarking on a BBA in Media in 2017 as I feel i am more of a creative person and I would live in a communication, marketing and media space.

Pros: The company has endless opportunities
Cons: Limited cross skilling

A day in the life of Erwin Whelan at the Standard Bank Group

My career at Standard Bank has been nothing short of phenomenal. Starting at the very bottom and eventually being placed in a Head role in the 9 years that I have been permanently employed speaks volumes of the company's value of growing its people. My learning's are with regards to loyalty and integrity to myself, but more so to my teams, our customers (both internal and external) and the organisation as a whole. I have an open and honest working relationship with my peers, management, subordinates and our customers. Leading a huge team is challenging on its own,but having the aforementioned relationship makes this a welcomed challenge. My enjoyment is around people interaction on various levels and undoubtedly being proud of my team and my excellent service ethos.

Pros: Brenda Niehaus (previous Standard Bank Group CIO) presented me with the prestigous Service Excellence award in 2012 and I have received numerous other accolades for leadership and service management during my tenure at the Standard Bank Group
Cons: IT Service Support in my sphere is 365 days a year and a 24 by 7 operation

Learn something new everyday, i would consider myself as an excellent team player.

I never had any issues with co-workers, always prepared to help or go the extra mile for the other stakeholders. Something i enjoyed the most was team building outings! That was when we all let lose and had fun. The most challenging part was when management kept changing and i had to learn understand thier ways of doing things and how they operated. I would say that, that was quite challenging.

Pros: Great job opportunity
Cons: Management that keeps on changing

Exposure in different sectors

I enjoy engaging with different stakeholders, coming across various challenges which adds to my problem solving skills, stakeholder engagement skills and project management skills. There are great learning opportunities through different institutions and there is always support from line managers. I also enjoy team engagement, stakeholders training sessions, system analysis, data analysis, reporting and regulatory advisory on systems and processes. It gets challenging when stakeholders do not adhere to time frames because it puts me under pressure

Pros: There is opportunity for promotion
Cons: Getting into the field of your choice is a challenge
