Best company ever

Telkom is the best company to work at, The company has the best interest of their employees at heart. I like how they encourage and motivate us always with their incentives, Performance rewards and i like the flexibility of saving your own 13th cheque. I have learnt most of the things that i know from Telkom, the employees there are very informative and they don't hold back information.

Pros: a learning environment
Cons: Telkom is going through a transformation journey

Business plan & conducive environment, people`s performance & customer service.

My day-to day activities at work are as follows: - Managing of work orders, coaching of staff, decision making, weighing up of possibilities, liasing with customers (both internal & external). Excellent relationship with co-workers, but at times it does get bitter, especially when implementing business decisions that are not popular. In this industry and mostly when dealing with people that learning is ongoing, it never ends! Managing of faults, resolving clients’ queries, when a team realise a common purpose/objective after a challenging task that created tensions. My most challenging aspects of my job are handling the unexpected or unplanned incidents, which are not on my "things to-do list". One must priorotise, act decisively and once the challenge is resolved look for opportunities within the same challenges, and/or come up with remedial plans or action to prevent re-occurrence.

Pros: The environment is ever changing.
Cons: It is now getting less challenging having worked in one environment for over 20 years.

HR specialist/ management

I'm currently working as a Specialist in Succession Planning, and my job revolves around Talent Management. I enjoyed it more when I was an HR Manager/ Business Partner, working with a wider spectrum of HR functions, including daily meetings, projects, and planning/ organising/ communication to all Line Managers. I was seen as a specialist in HR, including Incapacity cases, Disciplinary hearings, policies, and general Business Partner functions, analysing of data, wellness, talent management and recruitment. BEE takes preference and it seems impossible for me to get another (lateral or higher) position. I do not mind travelling to and from work, or for work, and is willing to change to a new employer, to enjoy my work again. Regards Wanda Hendrikz 0614571574

Pros: Managing my own job and time, projects, tight deadlines, laptop, cellphone, telephone rebate, Telkom Retirement Fund, close to home.
Cons: No opportunities for promotions, (focus on young BEE only), no rewards/ recognition, no further development, external courses at own cost. No more travelling opportunities.

Purpose driven work

Our company calls us wall to wall techs. We are responsible for all aspects of maintenance of the network. So on a typical day, I would have a new installation, which is basically wiring and testing a new service, from 2 m/b to 10g/b, then handing it over to the client. I would then visit DLU sites, and report whatever deviations to our facilities management company, and drive the repair to completion. I would attend a QA appointment, which is where I would do quality checks on new site builds by outside contractors or internal build techs. A fault reported by a client takes priority, and this is where we would normally work together with my colleagues to resolve it in the shortest time possible. I enjoy most being at the office and updating site information, or doing my DOP audit after visiting sites. Climbing towers has to be the most physically and emotionally challenging part of the job, closely followed by a callout at night.

Pros: Every problem is different, so we are encouraged to be creative.
Cons: Time is very important, so there is really no room for error and that adds ernomous pressure.

An accurate picture of what it's like to work at my company

I perform high level support to internal customers from various business units and external customers (both individual and corporate). Oversee the functionality of platforms, Value added services and contact centers. I interacts with my colleagues as much as required and I treasure these interactions as they improve the understanding and synergy of tasks that flow from end to end. I have learnt the how to communicate with people from different reporting levels and cultural backgrounds. I enjoy mostly when I determine to the root cause of the incident, fault or problem. The most challenging aspects of the job is when I encounter an incident impacting the whole country, for example when all calling services customers cannot make international calls and international customers cannot make incoming calls using home direct service.

Pros: Great opportunity for gaining Telecommunication and Information & Communication Technology know-how.
Cons: No opportunities for promotion

Excellent learning curve

for the past year that i have been working at this company as project coordinator it has been nothing but a great pleseure as i get exposed in many things ,my section handles the most complex projects thefore i need to be focused and detailed everydsay, and i work with much older people and i believe even thouggh i have much power to tell them whatr to do and express my disapointments should the bew failour thast could have been dogged i need to address matters with great respect and from time to time throw complements where they are earned, this job has though me a lot as i only had theory of it and everything seems grreat and easy untile you are actually on the field and need to tackle it, it then becomes samething else and sametimes i just need to put aside the fact that i am young and address other matters as strict as i can ever be as otyher people tend to take advantage because they know that i am a youngstar.

Pros: always keep track of your projects progress
Cons: overtime if need being
