A good stepping stone

I've been with Marsh for 3 years. I've started as a graduate and was promoted to a Risk Consultant. The company has provided me with a lot of consulting experience - working in a number of companies. This has taught me about different industries and how to deal with different types of people. In risk management one needs to have facilitation skills at all levels of seniority, this is one of the skills that I've learnt at Marsh. The most challenging aspect of my work is the long hours that the work demands from you, especially when work needs to be delivered on time for the client. Sometimes you have to work over weekends to get work done which this can after your life outside work.

Pros: Great learning experience
Cons: Long hours can affect life outside work

Learning Curve

A typical work day at Marsh is always very busy, never a dull moment. The company is large but we are all "family", because I train a lot of the colleagues to work on a program, I am exposed to very many people within the company and surrounds. I am always greeted in a friendly way by all and I believe I have a great relationship with them. I have learnt "Not to sweat the small stuff", it makes life a whole lot easier to manage and also to trust your instincts. I enjoy training and troubleshooting with my colleagues. I like to work in a team. the most challenging aspects are making sure the figures that I receive and work with are returned accurately. I work with 7 other African countries and the language barrier can be an issue at times.

Pros: Flexi hours
Cons: Long working hours

Marsh has a fast pace business environment. I work within a team of 13 Hr professionals. 4 of which consist of the payroll / hr operations teams. I have a good understanding qith all my co workers. On a daily basis I offer support and guidence to the Hr and payroll administrators. I am a supervisor of two payroll administrators. I have learnt how to process and manage the payroll for 1500 employee over 6 South Africa entities and 7 African countries. I have also learnt how to control my teams function by audit standards. I enjoy working within a large team amd i enjoy learning and providing support to all team memebers. The most challenging aspects of my job had been to stabilise the payroll environment.

My Tenure at Marsh

Working at Marsh has been challenging yet rewarding. I have learned so much about myself and learned how to be more confident. I have also been able build strong relationships with colleagues and learned that sometimes you just have to have thick skin and not take things so personally. What I enjoyed most was that I was given the ability to work freely and independently, without being micromanaged.

Pros: Global company
Cons: You are just a number/small fish in a big pond; no room for growth
