Excellent Team work

I manage a team of artisans in the maintenance and breakdowns minimization on the TMM.We are a safety conscious team in every work to be done where risk assessment is a must. We work as a team and I try to understand employee's needs within a team including their strong areas and otherwise.Challenges are when a planned task to be performed is changed and there is shortage of employees to execute the task.

Pros: Study Opportunity
Cons: Long working hours

My best working experience

I have enjoyed working at Gold Fields for the past 14 years until I was retrenched in December. I have established wonderful working relationships with many people and I have also enjoyed the experience of working in the mining industry. The variety of tasks allocated made the job enjoyable and challenging at the same time. I would say that the most challenging aspect of the job was educating people with a mining focus on governance matters which they do not see as crucial to from their perspective. The best part of the job was learning the way mines operate and in particular the processes in place to ensure that adequate controls are implemented.

Pros: Unique industry, promotions, meeting people from different backgrounds
Cons: Retrenchment always possible

Bitter sweet

Working for this company has taught me so many things, including the things that I did not know that I do not prefer. My working day starts very early in the morning 6h30 and at that time it is already hectic. I enjoy most the fact that I stay closer to my family. It is unfortunate that the culture is not right.

Pros: Closer to home
Cons: Culture

A working day at South Deep

To work at South Deep is a challenge. The mining industry is difficult to work in but very beneficial towards building experience. the colleagues are friendly, supportive and well organised. One thing about the mining industry is the it pays extremely well and looks after its employees

Pros: remuneration is good
Cons: opportunity for promotion on surface is low

Good experience

It is a best atmosphere to work at and safety is essentially and the company do practice that ,the opportunity are not that much available due access of skill and machinery being used . Perceiveer is what I ve learned and the company gave me an opportunity to study because I had only matric and now I am having a Bcom Degree. The most of challenging of the job is that it is underground about 3000 feet below the surface and that challenges and safety must be priority.

Pros: Great opportunity of development
Cons: Take long to get job for what you studied for
