Engen Petroleum Ltd Reviews

26 years operational experience. 10 years management experience

Operations is the engine room of Engen, different challenges daily. I am hands on and enjoy working with people. Managing a Petroleum facility is high risk / managing the daily interventions / processes comes with huge challenges. as an operations manager you have to be on top of your job. In operations 26 years to date and I haven't stopped learning. Most challenging aspect is asset integrity

Pros: looking for a new challenges
Cons: Due to re-structure in operations i was placed back into a facility manager post- no real challenges

My learnings

I work well with both my colleagues and line manager, a typical day revolves around analyzing the cost movements on the system and what the exchange rate has done in the past day as it impacts my gross margins. I have learned the nults and bolts of cross border trading and what does a typical manager needs to have to succeed in Africa. The challenging aspect is the fact that each region is unique from the other in terms of requirements...others are price sensitive and others quality sensitive

Pros: Ability to move from one department to the other
Cons: very specialized, can limit you if your work there for an extended time

Very good in learning

I’m self-motivated and a hard worker and I have enough knowledge on bulk and transport operations. I’m having good communication skills and I can solve major problems and also analyses situation. I’m computer literacy base on relevant with SAP R3 and SAP 4.6C modules. Working under pressure and stress is not a problem. As team player and team leader I’m equipped with excellent Leadership skills and mentoring skills. It helps me counsel and develop staff. I also want to work together with the company to help me seeing myself progressing and I want to make my company succeeding daily. I’m making sure that all the staffs is in safety environment and are wearing PPE for health and safety. Respect each and every one. Punctuality is my motto. Make sure that today’s work is done today. what I enjoy on this company is that it was giving us course to do paying for us. in other words they were giving us more knowledge about operations safety and utilizing the asset.

Great work environment

I have learnt a great deal, exposure to the business as a whole. The team is amazing to work with, we all work together to find a solution. the company very customer centric and do all possible to retain our customers and look for the best and cost effective way to conduct business. I work with the Lubes supply chain division and I get exposed to all parts of the business , which leaves very little room for anyone to be bored or feel under utilized. most challenging part of what I do is getting others to adhere to deadlines and having to play bad cop to get staff to cooperate.

Pros: i have learnt a great deal
Cons: not much growth opportunities

Great platform for work experience

Engen Petroleum is a huge dynamic company in an ever changing petroleum industry . A normal typical day is rather hectic as I work as an Admin Clerk in a reception area including attending to calls , visitors and customer own collection . We have a very good team spirit as colleagues learning each others critical responsibilities to ensure that even when one is absent it is business as usual no gaps felt . In our industry people are forever changing roles or moving to other companies so being flexible to move around it of utmost importance and relieving while others are on leave or vacant posts . Our company is forever changing not stagnant and the most challenging aspect of my job is that my position as a clerk in Procurement there can be a level of bottlenecking which requires a vigilant person as our Financial Department is in Cape town and I work closely with them to ensure that our Vendors are paid on time .

Pros: Huge Company relocation opportunities are endless .
Cons: Restructuring

Its a pleasure working at Engen.

All fellow colleagues get along as we are in a team environment. We have a chill room where all come together for lunch and tea time. I have a good overall business relationship with all that I meet as well on a management level. Everyday I learn something new about the industry. How price change works when the petrol/diesel increase. Learning how the supply chain works. I do enjoy participating in the company's campaign as we support several projects like the Breadline Africa where we had to donate toys /non-perishable and blankets for the underprivileged crèche in Khayelitsha. For me the challenging aspect of the job is when we have little to no contactibility to the dealers to conduct / complete the surveys.

Pros: Great exposure to the petroleum industry
Cons: Working on contract as a survey agent

Good company to work for.

My typical work day - Checking emails and replying. Preparing EOD batches and continue with my other duties. My relationship with my colleagues was very good and used to work together as a team. I have learnt Teamwork and Integrity and most of all ownership. I enjoyed learning from my colleagues, their jobs. The most challenging aspect of the job was when I did my best to do my job and someone who is supposed to assist me for the job to get completely done, take his or her time to do that.

Pros: Excellent benefits
Cons: It takes times for others to get promotions.
