Durban University of Technology Reviews

Awesome experience of team work which would result in a very low Challenges at work.

My work was an academic based work. I taught Cost Accounting and Economics. The Faculty would allocate total hours for me to work, and it was upto me to allocate, to choose the time to work, as long as the hours will be fully used. We had a very good relationship with my colleagues. That results in the challenges to be very low in the industry. We were helping each other with almost everything we needed from each other relating to work. That taught me a team work and sharing of the information and resources. Doing the revisions is what I like the most. I would get a lot of questions and some are challenging and some makes jokes on asking questions, soo that made the learning and teaching to flow smoothly. I had to come prepared at all times. We sometimes got troubled by getting venues to use. That was at expense of our time.

Pros: Good Team work and Developed good communication
Cons: The insufficiency of venues.

Limited career growth for support staff

I had a great relationship with some of my colleagues. There's. Bit of rivalry because there's limited opportunities for career progression. I enjoyed dealing with students and finding alternative ways of assisting them. The work environment could be improved, by increasing professionalism, going beyond of duty not being stuck on doing your job but also help we're help is required.

Pros: Opportunities to study further
Cons: limited career progression

Excellent learning experience

Work is a day to day consistent type of job that one needs to fulfill on a daily basis. The staff is helpful but can be a bit disorganized sometimes. I enjoyed working with students and putting smiles on students faces. It was a bit challenging to work with staff that was not doing their job properly and thus jeopardizing your performance.

Pros: Great exposure with working with students
Cons: Unsatisfying salary

My current role

My current role as a Cost Analyst has been eye opening for me. It moved me from a accounting focused profile to a capacity where I am able to view the organisation in its entirety. I am able to interact with both the academic and non academic sectors. Understand operations in other key areas. Participating departmental strategic plans to presenting financial models to non-financial Managers / Deans and Directors. Through these interactions I am able to learn and view departments not just from a financial view but also as a strategic component of the University.

Pros: Great levels of interaction from junior right up to executive management
Cons: Limited Growth options

Exposure to Tertiary Institution Environment

Working for an instution gave a broad spectrum of different work ethics ranging from dealing with academics, undergraduates and postgraduates. Working in a computer laboratory environment gave the skills to work independently unsupervised and to work under pressure meeting deadlines and targets. Additionally I gained experience in dealing with Cloud Services plus installing, configuration and administering 100+ computers daily. Thats the least of tasks I had gained.

Pros: Great opportunitues to further one's studies
Cons: Redudancy of work plus I had reached ceiling in my department.
