University of Cape Town Reviews

Excellent learning curve. Lots of room for personal growth and self-development.

The University of Cape Town is a fantastic place to work. You are given an opportunity as an individual to use your initiative and there are lots of support within the organization to help you grow and develop. Meet and greet all colleagues first thing in the morning and have a cup of coffee. Check tasks and diary for the day, put all supporting documents, itineraries together to accompany any meetings that are meant to happen. Logistical arrangements for meetings, venue, taking minutes, notifying everyone, and making notes of apologies. Every day brings along new challenges depending which department or faculty you work. My passion is working with academics and students, overall the staff, students and all on campus are very friendly, polite and professional. Confidentiality must be handled discreetly at all times and your image you project must remain professional since you are the face of the company. This makes the University of Cape Town a special place to work....because it feels like home!

Pros: Great opportunity for promotion
Cons: None

A great consolidation of skills accumulated over the years

I am a member of the Executive Committee for my division, reporting directly to the Executive Director. Working here is varied as it is dependant on what is going on within the University. In quiet times a typical day is composed of dealing with communication requests from management within my division, checking that the information on our website is up to date and liaising with the central communications department. I serve as the spokesperson for the department and also communicate on behalf of the Executive Director where required. The pace is different when there are protests because the focus changes to mainly staying on top of everything that is happening and putting together draft media statements on behalf of the Media team as my department deals with all aspects of security.

Pros: Great opportunity for learning and growth
Cons: The uncertainty of higher education funding

Broad range of issues to deal with

A typical day starts with responding to queries and re-directing where required. Requires close relationships with the different directors to be hands on with what is happening. I have learnt to balance views from the executives and general workers who make up the majority of the employees. I enjoy having an informed view of what is happening throughout the institution and reporting on it. It is challenging at times being asked to sit on committees that do not necessarily fall within my expertise.

Pros: Intellectually stimulating environment
Cons: Only internally focused

Great intellectually stimulating environment

I enjoy working here as every day is different. The department covers a range of responsibilities including technical staff, cleaners and administration staff which requires a broad range of communication tools. A typical work day starts with responding to queries or complaints from clients or re-directing these to the relevant managers. I have learnt to be patient as it is a bureaucratic environment and decisions can take time and a lot of follow-ups. I enjoy the variety in my work and being able to communicate with a broad spectrum of people from academics to security personnel.

Pros: Great work life balance
Cons: Too internally focused

Excellent diverse thinking

A mixture of specialists in politics, commerce, development engineering, social sciences, engineering, scientists, environment and humanities with different levels of qualifications meet and interact everyday in this Energy Research Centre to contribute and exchange views on current science, engineering, technology, policy and environmental aspects locally and abroad. Migration from industry to public sector during the next 7 years and academic research in chemical/metallurgical engineering over the passed 8 years allows me to have a full perspective of various topics on the table. My responsibility is coupled with promoting scholarly/high-quality research culminating in academic publications. I am responsible for the editorial board constituted by the specialists based locally and abroad as well as raise funds to maintain the budget of academic journal. I have learnt new ways to get people on your side and facilitated results through them, despite diverse cultures.

Pros: Open mindedness
Cons: Aptitudes diluted by lack of specialist roles

Self taught in a different industry

My current position requires that I have high level of computer literacy, am able to not only communicate effectively with staff and students (the customers) at the university but that I am also able to train and manage my staff to do the same. Furthermore, I am required to manage the relationship between various stakeholders at different levels, as well as ensuring that Service Level Agreement (SLA) for the environment I manage is upheld. Over my period of employment, I have not only developed, but mastered the necessary skills to competently fulfill my position done both through my work experience, as well as through volunteering and personal development outside of the workplace. My most valuable lessons have been in working with, training and mentoring others. I believe in maintaining an open line of communication with the computer lab assistants I manage, which in turn maintains a level of excellence well recognised

Pros: Ability to study and work, both financially and practically.
Cons: No opportunity for promotion and limited for growth.

Overall it is an excellent place to work due to the exposure it provides.

I start early to action overnight emails. Then review the day’s work for all staff to ensure that all functions are on schedule. I meet with admin staff to check progress, make suggestions about jobs they’re struggling with or advise them to arrange for training. Though SAP I do the payments, reconciliations and reporting on all funds. I calculate pay & hrs for contract staff, complete forms and submit to HR. I assist lecturers select tutors to appoint. I create course submission boxes. I create formulated templates in preparation for marks upload. I set up and ensure that all equipment is in perfect working order. I am responsible for all events management and meetings. Throughout this I deal with telephonic and walk-in queries from students, parents and staff. I enjoy all aspects of my job esp making the budget allocated work without compromising or underpaying any staff member or vendor. This function is closely link to the HR. I also enjoy the Project Management aspect of my work.

Pros: Currently there are no promotional aspects
Cons: In current conditions there's hardl ny opportunity for promotion

New Challenges

Handling a high volume of calls and emails, dealing with enquiries with applicant, parents and different faculties. Love working in a team. Mostly learnt how to keep the person on the other side of the line calm and relaxed and conclude each inquiry so that the person dont come back and I see that the client is satisfied that the enquiry has been closed successfully. Most challenging aspect would have been the not so friendly callers and no matter what is being said to you and no matter the manner they should always at all time hear a smile in your voice and your willingness to help them to the best of your abilities.I enjoyed getting to learn something new, a challenge is always something I look forward to. Like growth.

Pros: Feel my hard work will speak for itself
Cons: Not scared of working, acknowledgment should always speak for itself

Good cable building skills

Greetings I work in very friendly environment sometimes we don't feel the pressure of dead lines for cables to be delivered. Challenges only happen when fix some cable defects because some steps are irreversible. I like analysing cable data pack and challenge some decisions made to my suoervisor. The company does also electronic warfare controllers but I have not be invited to be part of its construction. I feel bad about that because I have ND in electronics but now I work in cable building department. I want to develop my skills of interest. I work with good people.

Pros: nice exposure!
Cons: not challenging
