Tiso Blackstar Group Reviews

Fantastic company to work for. Really fast moving and producing the best content.

My experience at Tiso Blackstar was a really exciting one. I interacted on a daily basis with the best journalists on the continent. Fast paced and always changing. Producing some of the best newspapers in Africa. The breaking news is what kept me ticking and I enjoyed going to work everyday because the staff were really great and appreciated your support. As long as the system was up 24/7 and properly maintained, they were happy. A really fast paced production environment. I have learnt so much about the politics of government and how the news gets produced and the paper goes to print without a glitch. My most challenging aspects of this job was to ensure that the paper comes out evry day and every week.

Pros: Always appreciated and patted on the back for job well done
Cons: Working every weekend, including New Years Day.

It's a good company to start your career at but don't stay for more than 5 years.

From the moment you log onto your pc the phones are ringing. You have to balance confirming employment, directing calls and resetting staff passwords on the employee self service system. Then there are offers, dummy payslips, new contracts and renewal of contracts that have to be made and the chasing of line managers and employees to sign the relevant documents (sometimes this delays payroll). I also assist in IR matters which is never fun but being called into the principal's office never is. The staff and culture is good, I'd like to believe I get all with everyone because I'm so approachable. I enjoy conducting interviews and meeting different personalities. The most challenging thing is not getting support from executives, it dents your spirit & morale.

Pros: Meeting diverse people
Cons: Lack of communication with staff & people who have been in the company for a long time don't want to distribute work (fear young talent will take over their jobs)

Excellent platform to launch your career.

Great company to work for when you're getting started. Salary isn't great, but there are opportunities for growth. Senior management try hard to make the environment good for staff.

Pros: Good promotion opportunities
Cons: Poor remuneration

Growth and learning

High pressure environment daily tasks include booking of advert, checking financials, receipting, proof reading. I've gained customer service skills and adaptability due to the nature of the environment.

Pros: Development
Cons: Volumes

Great earning potential

A typical work day for me involves the following tasks: Lead sourcing companies relevant to my magazine. Example: Business to Business and Lifestyle companies. Building and sustaining relationships with clients and potential clients. Negotiating if need be. Follow up emails and calls Closing deals Making sure the paper work process goes smoothly in order to secure the business. I have a good relationship with my fellow colleagues. The most challenging aspect I am facing now is that the industry I am in is dying and I have no room to grow where I am.

Pros: Good earning potential, I have learnt to speak to people on all levels.
Cons: Commission only, The industry is dying

Relaxed environment

Typical day starts with a scrum stand up, it includes regression testing on publications, solving bugs logged by users, creating test cases and performing tests - desktop and mobile. We have a professional relationship with colleagues. We communicate work changes via Skype or slack or quick chat f2f. I have learned a lot regarding testing tools, mobile testing and overall testing in a media company. I enjoy the fact that I deal with different problems everyday, it never gets dull. I also love the management style whereby we have freedom to work in a way that suits us, as long as we deliver.

Pros: Flexible hours and environment, freedom to try whatever tool or system that will be beneficial
Cons: Little growth unless you do your own thing
