Corporate vs Non Profit what is the difference

My first experience within the Non Profit sector and it is no different to the corporate world. Initially it appeared that the work environment was very academic and outputs seemed of lesser importance. However over the years, the funders' have placed a lot more emphasis on outputs(targets) and on efficiency (profitability) or cost of providing services which have forced NPO's to seek new skill sets. This interesting transition has caused quite an upset in the recruitment field with skills sets requiring strong management ability being scarce and hard to come by. It has therefore demonstrated that there is no difference to the challenges that face HR, that is, skilled and well trained employees are always the biggest asset to any business.

Pros: Learning about the public sector without being in the public sector per se
Cons: Limited opportunity for any career path due to the nature of the funding model

NPO Challenges

A typical day at the office consisted mainly of 'troubleshooting' people related problems and challenges being experience by their line managers. This meant that on all the projects eg about 10 different funders, you had to be acutely aware of the outcomes for the projects and why things had to be done in a particular manner. It also meant that you had to forge strong relationships with management level staff out in the field from a distance. So utilisting skype and such platforms to reach management or hold meetings without requiring them to travel became quite important especially since they were often based in the rural areas of the Eastern Cape. However the most challenging part was to ensure that there was some form of equality across all the projects especially when it came to remuneration levels.

Cons: No growth or development
