Making inroads into a new industry

The project manager has to manage the process of creating a book until it is print-ready. This include liaising with authors and overseas rights' managers; drawing up proposed project budget, scheduling and compiling the best team; commission & managing the freelance language practitioners, and brief the relevant designers. There are 3 main goals: 1. Meet the to-printer deadline; 2. Produce a quality product; and 3. Complete the project with in budget. Great communication & people skills are important, as are sticking to deadlines and budgets, and being be attentive to details and NEVER to assume anything. As publishing manager, I had to develop a profitable publishing program, manage my team and their different approaches to deadlines. I had to negotiate with overseas publishers to get licensing rights at the best possible terms. I loved this part of the work. The challenge is to achieving required GP margins in a competitive market and without compromising quality.

Pros: Excellent learning opportunity; international exposure; exposure to budgets and team management
Cons: Long working hours; tight deadlines; low GP margins and dealing in a very competitive niche market

Loving what I do

Same days are busy others can be relaxing. We are a very close knit group of people. we work well together and team work plays an important role in the day to day running of the company.

Pros: this job has been rewarding
Cons: limited growth movement
