Southern African Shipyards Reviews

A good place to grow you knowledge/skill and get experience.

The environment is good and clean, the work is always on going, cutting steel profiles, bending and/ rolling steel sheets, developing and assembling according to a given drawing. It is a shipbuilding company so daily tasks include erecting tug units and tack-welding the seams the good thing is that we don't have bosses but leaders, the people that you can always go to for reference.

Pros: A good place for experience
Cons: No notice of retrenchment.

I am highly motivated with strong morals and also a fast learner. Who is able to apply new skills effectively with interpersonal skills. I am tactful and calm under pressure and also an asset to any team. I have an initiative and ability to work efficiently and effectively without Supervision and I am willing to grow within the company.

SAS Project review

The company has a single major project, although it is currently tendering for others. This project consists of the design, development and building of an hydrographic survey ship. This is a very interesting project. The design/project team is heavily understaffed, and lacks skills. However the project staff complement, the client and the customer are enthusiastic about the project, and want to make it a success. There seems to be no major conflicts amongst the workers, although there is some at the higher management levels; this is still considered to be within a level that is manageable. Subcontractor management has been demanding, as the contracting documentation was not as explicit as it should have been. A stumbling block that may affect the project in the near future is cash flow; this could become a larger obstacle than the lack of skills.

Pros: one of the few real projects in the country presently
Cons: low salaries, no training offered to engineering staff
