Career growth in different aspects of Electrical Engineering

A typical day at work involves repairing of AWS (Automatic Wind Sensors), Monitoring of radars, calibration of wind sensors and termination boards. I have a very good relationship with my co-workers, I am learning as much as my brain allows me from them, they involve me in different tasks, from Information Technology to Engineering applications I enjoy working throughout the day, learning as much as I can, asking myself a lot of questions and creating questions, I believe that there is always something to learn, always! The most challenging aspects of my job, or the most important aspects rather are making sure that when I calibrate an instrument that is going to be used in aviation, I have to concentrate extra hard and leave no stone upturned as this is extremely important, because pilots, not to mention the lives of thousands of passengers that land and take off at O.R Tambo rely on them.

Pros: Great opportunity for growth in a rare field
Cons: Huge responsibilities

Multitasking

The thing that motivates me in every opportunity that I get is commitment and passion. I strive for continued excellence and I am very passionate about my work and career. the work that I am doing is office administration work. I like a job that is challenging because it makes me to think and be a hard worker, ever since I came here I have gained a lot of administration skills. I get more motivated when somebody tells me about my faults or mistake because that helps me to improve my work and deliver the work that is expected.

Pros: getting expose in lot of work
Cons: unchallenging job

A Whole different ball game

A typical working day involves high paced thought-provoking activities. Teamwork is mostly encouraged with the new CE having introduced an open plan set up so that employees can interact more. I personally get along with all my colleagues and learn a lot from each and everyone of them. My current employment has taught me to be spontaneous and resilient. I enjoy challenges that come with my job, I am constantly kept on my toes. The most challenging aspects of the job are having to understand each individual board member and provide the necessary needs. Maintaining a balanced relationship between the Board and the CE can be a mammoth task as well.

Pros: Great opportunity for growth
Cons: Great for Scientists not for support functions

Great company

Challenging, strategic, & enjoyable role. Supportive team at executive and within my department. The role required being responsive to the developments within the market on talent matters both national and international as we also operated at international space. Role required strategic thinking, decisiveness, problem solving, people oriented ethical leader. The role involved engagements (conferences, meetings etc) with business leaders, executive and Board at times for business strategy, performance, governance etc. I enjoyed the interaction with the team sharing ideas with them, as well as interaction with business leaders and IMBIZOs with employees on key strategic matters of the organisation. I also enjoyed working with my boss who was very authentic, ethical and a visionary. The most challenging aspect - building a commercial and sales driven culture after the mandate of the organisation included commercial aspect, ultimately it worked out and is a continuous effort.

Pros: Great learning environment
Cons: Limited resources

Summary

I have worked for the SAWS for more than 11 years now. I have served in various portfolios i.e EE Committee, Bargaining Forum etc. My organisation is very dynamic in terms of demography and very busy with meetings mostly everyday. Each day is different. Employee Engagement is key especially on the position that I occupy. I have a good relationship with all levels employees within the organisation. I enjoy engaging with employees either one on one or in a group. Mentorship is one of the things I love and enjoy. I have learnt that people (employee) regardless of their levels they both have a key role to play and it is my role as an HR person to instil that principle in each an every employee. The most challenging part of my job is engagement with Organised Labour but I have developed a character of listening and respond in such away that there is hope to their cries.

Pros: There is no opportunity for Growth for support staff.
Cons: I dont have issues with putting long hours but the challenge in the current moment is lack of recognition when one goes an extra mile to make end meets

Great learning curve

My responsibility is to look after SAWS Facilities at Regional offices across the country including the Head Office. I have 23 Regional offices and i work closely with Regional Managers and Office Managers. I travel a lot in order to conduct inspections and attend to queries logged via our Facilities Help desk, which established to reach the Regions. Reaching all the Regions and been able to address all their facilities needs has helped me to easily establish the maintenance plan, which i introduced to SAWS. I enjoy mostly when i develop and implement facilities processes within an organisation. The most challenging aspect in Facilities is the availability of funds. It is therefore important to execute tasks and plans within the allocated budget and been able to drive Life cycle replacement on equipment to extend their life. This helps in driving the maintenance costs lower.

Pros: Great opportunity for growth and interaction with professionals
Cons: Long working hours and at times extends to weekends

Exellecent learning jounery

The work that i do on a daily basis is general administration, requisitions for any events coming up, billing of clients that we have monthly contracts with. I work well with people, respect is something of high regards among colleagues in order to get the job done smoothly. I leaned to liaise with clients of high level and assist them where and assist them with queries they might have and direct them to relevant people that have depth of knowledge in assisting them further and most important thing is confidentiality. As our department was about sales and generating revenue for the organization, i learned how important it is to maintain good relationships among clients and colleagues in order to reach the target. The challenging factor is that most of the things were of high level for me as i was student fresh of from school.

Pros: Great for growing my career
Cons: High level decisions

Excellent learning curve

My current workplace has taught me that very day isn’t going to be the best day and some days can be downright challenging. However, if you can remember to look on the bright side, the difficult days can be just another way to grow in both your career and life in general. I have also learned that in times of stagnation can happen for several reasons, such as becoming too comfortable with a situation. A valuable life lesson I learned from my work is that, if you always strive to learn more and continue to progress through times of stagnation are those who succeed. My last best learning experience I have ever learned is that every failure gives you the chance to grow both personally and professionally. There is no better way to know what works than knowing what doesn’t.

Pros: Great opportunity promotion
Cons: Work load
